Huawei P30 Pro New Edition announced, and it’s the exact same thing

Last week, there was a rumor that Huawei could be preparing to launch a “new” smartphone in the form of the Huawei P30 Pro New Edition. Turns out the rumors were true because over in Germany, the handset has since been officially announced.

For those wondering what so “new” about it, it turns out that there is nothing, save for the fact that it comes with Android 10 preinstalled. In case you’re wondering why Huawei is launching a “New Edition” of the P30 Pro, it is basically to skirt around the US trade ban that is currently in place.

Huawei is currently on the US Entity List that prevents them from doing business with the likes of Google. As a result, phones released after the P30 series did not come with Google Play Services installed. As much as Huawei is trying to create its own services, without a doubt there are some who might prefer using something more familiar.

There is sort of a loophole in place where companies are allowed to continue making and selling phones that already existed prior to the ban, like the P30 series, hence the P30 Pro New Edition. Presumably the “New Edition” label is to make customers think that this is a new phone, but in reality it is more or less the same.

This isn’t necessarily a knock on Huawei because the P30 series is a fantastic lineup, although a bit old by tech standards. For now, the Huawei P30 Pro New Edition seems to be only available in Germany, and there’s no word on whether it will eventually find its way to more markets.
