Nokia’s first 5G smartphone will be launching in 2020

Earlier this year, it was rumored that HMD Global could be planning on launching a 5G version of the Nokia 9 this year. Obviously given now that we’re in December, that will not be happening, but it does not mean that HMD Global has no plans for 5G enabled Nokia handsets.

In fact, during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas took to the stage where he revealed that the company will be launching a 5G Nokia smartphone next year. Interestingly enough, the handset in question will be powered by Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon 765 which will offer up 5G integration.

We say that this is interesting because the Snapdragon 765 is clearly a mid-range chipset and we thought that HMD Global would have gone with the Snapdragon 865, but perhaps HMD Global is trying to appeal to the masses with a mid-ranger. The Snapdragon 765, for those unfamiliar, is a new mid-range chipset that comes with the X52 5G modem integrated into it. This is versus the Snapdragon 865 which will require a separate X55 modem component.

At this point in time, we’re still not sure what other specs or features we can expect from this 5G Nokia handset, but hopefully come CES or MWC 2020, we’ll have more details to share.
