Some Pixel 3a phones are shutting down at random
Usually, when you buy a new smartphone, you expect that it will work out of the box. That isn’t always the case, as some Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL owners are discovering. According to a series of posts shared on Reddit and Google’s own product forums, it seems that some users are running into issues where their Pixel smartphones are shutting down seemingly at random intervals.
It is unclear as to what is causing these issues, with some users booting into safe mode only to find that the problem persists. This indicates that the issue is Google-related as safe mode effectively disables a lot of non-core apps and services. Some users seem to have some luck by turning off WiFi, but we’re not sure if that will necessarily work for everyone.
“Whenever I connect to my work wifi and let the phone sit for ~10 minutes it will require a reboot. It will do the normal lock and then after some time just shutdown, requiring me to hold the power button for ~30 seconds to restart it. For the most part when I’m connected to my home wifi it will not duplicate this although it has crashed once or twice now at home in the 5 days I have had it. Leaving the phone with wifi off seems to prevent the crashing all together.”
This is not the first time that Google’s phones have encountered these kinds of crashing issues. With every Pixel smartphone release, there seems to be some sort of hardware or software related problems, which is kind of embarrassing given that these phones are supposed to showcase the best of Android.
Two of our team members have been using the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL since Google I/O and have not experienced these issues. Nick has been using the phone as his only device since then and the phone has not rebooted once. While we’re not saying that the issue is non-existent, it may not be very widespread.
Hopefully, Google be able to work with those who are experiencing the issue and find a way to resolve it soon.
