Could a Pixel smartphone with a foldable display be next?

0

Are smartphones with foldable displays the future that we can expect? There are many things to like about this form factor, one of which is how we can easily transform such a device from a smartphone to a tablet. This makes it incredibly useful when it comes to productivity and entertainment.

So far a few Android handset makers have thrown their hat into the ring, such as Samsung and Huawei. Others such as LG and OnePlus are still holding off for now while they assess the demand for such handsets. Now it seems that Google could be interested in such devices as well, at least according to a recently discovered patent where the company is exploring the concept of a smartphone with a foldable display.

Based on the patent’s diagram, Google’s approach to a foldable device seems to be rather basic and simplistic. This suggests that this patent is merely exploratory as opposed to it being a device that Google is actively working on, but that’s just speculation on our part. Google has some interest in such devices, though. Last year the company published a blog post where they revealed that Android would be supporting foldable devices.

Prior to that, Google had also announced that Android would start to support the notch which later made its debut on the Pixel 3 XL, so who knows, maybe Android’s support for foldable devices could be a sign that a foldable Pixel smartphone could be part of Google’s roadmap for the future.
