Android Q beta will be open to even more devices than last years Pie beta
When Google releases a new version of Android, the beta build is typically made available to Pixel devices. At Google I/O last year, the company unveiled Android P, later to be known as Pie, with a difference that sent the crowd into applause. The Android P beta was opened up to a select number of OEMs in addition to the Pixel devices. This was thanks to Project Treble, and according to the Android Developers Backstage podcast in episode 110, this is set to take a step to the next level in the Android Q beta.
Iliyan Malchev from Project Treble said on the Podcast that the number of devices that will be able to run the Android Q beta is set to significantly grow from those included in the P release. As a reminder, the OEMs that participated in the Android P beta were: Essential, Nokia, OnePlus, Oppo, Sony, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
It’ll be a few months before we will see which OEMs will be added to the list, which will be announced at Google I/O this year. It’s possible we’ll see the likes of Huawei added to the list, as well as LG, but wouldn’t hold your breath for Samsung.
Project Treble is only a good thing for the state of Android fragmentation and seemingly will take another step forward this year to get the new software in the hands of the masses without the need for a Pixel device.
