Spotify could be looking to get in the hardware game with a smart speaker of its own

The last couple of weeks have been rather dominated by the release of the Apple HomePod, and how it stacks up against other smart speakers on the market, mainly the Google Home Max. While Google’s and Apple’s smart speakers have support for Play Music and Apple Music out of the box, Spotify has been left in the dark a bit.

However, some new job listings from Spotify suggest that the company could be working on a smart speaker of sorts of its own. There are three new listings for “Operations Manager- Project Manager“, “Senior Project Manager for Hardware Production“, and “Project Manager for Hardware Production and Engineering.”

To me, it sure seems that Spotify is at least working on some behind-the-scenes plans to release yet another smart speaker option on the market. Last year seemed to be the epitome of smart speakers, but with the release of the HomePod and rumors of a HomePod Mini in the future, things could get a lot more crowded.

It’s also important to remember that there have been rumors swirling about whether Google would release an Amazon Echo Show competitor. This could be nothing more than just a Google Home Max with a display, but that doesn’t change the fact that the market is starting to get more and more crowded every day.

Considering the fact that Spotify is (arguably) the best music streaming service on the market, it would make some sense to try and capitalize on this budding market. Those who are dedicated to Spotify would likely jump at the chance to get a new smart speaker for their favorite streaming service.

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out, and if Spotify ends up just working on a smart speaker, or looks to enter more hardware categories. Let us know what you think about the possibility of a smart speaker from Spotify and if you would be interested in picking one of these up.
