Xiaomi officially unveils the new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus

Over the last week or so we’ve seen rumblings surrounding the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. These came after Xiaomi began sending press invitations for an event which took place earlier today, where the company officially unveiled its latest devices.

Xiaomi Redmi 5

Starting with the Redmi 5, the device features a 5.7-inch HD+ display, with a resolution of 1440 x 720, making this yet another device to come with an aspect ratio of 2:1. Powering the budget option is the Snapdragon 450 chipset, along with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage.

The Redmi 5 packs a punch in the battery department, as Xiaomi has included a 3,300mAh battery, which Xiaomi claims will give users two-day battery life. Pricing for the standard Redmi 5 starts at $120 for the 2GB/16GB variant and $135 for the 3GB/32GB model.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

Moving onto the bigger brother, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus features a larger 5.99-inch FHD+ display, also with a 2:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2160 x 1080. The processor has also been upgraded a bit with the 5 Plus, as the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. This has been coupled with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

Thanks to the bigger display, Xiaomi has included a larger 4,000mAh battery which Xiaomi is claiming will also provide up to two-days worth of battery, or 17 days of standby. Pricing for the Redmi 5 Plus begins at $150 for the 3GB/32GB model and $195 for the 4GB/64GB variant.

Specs

You may have noticed that there were a few specs that weren’t made device-specific, and those include the cameras and body. Both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus come equipped with a 5MP front-facing camera, which has been coupled with a “selfie light” to ensure that the lighting conditions are right. As for the rear-facing camera, Xiaomi is featuring a 12MP sensor with a 1.25-micron pixel size, and phase detection autofocus.

Sales for the device will get underway in China starting on December 12th, but Xiaomi did not share if these devices will be made available in any other markets. Let us know what you think about the new Redmi lineup of devices and if you’d like to see a US launch at some point in the future.
