Samsung likely to hold separate event for Galaxy S9 after Mobile World Congress

While many folks are focused on finishing their Christmas shopping and getting ready to celebrate the holidays, some of us are looking into next year as we gear up for a new year of flagship devices. One such device that is expected to lead the way yet again is the Galaxy S9.

Initial reports stated that there was an outside chance that the device would be making an appearance at CES 2018, but it seems that Samsung may be waiting until either Mobile World Congress to unveil its flagship. The report also states there’s a possibility that Samsung will hold a completely separate launch event, similar to what we saw with the Samsung Galaxy S8 event.

As a reminder, Samsung held simultaneous events in New York and London back in March to showcase Bixby, the Galaxy S8 lineup, and all of the new software enhancements. There is not much information available regarding specs for the Galaxy S9 as of yet, but the report does shoot down any possibility of an in-display fingerprint scanner.

“It is highly unlikely for Galaxy S9 to have an in-display fingerprint scanner as the technical challenges are still left unaddressed.”

However, we are expecting to see an improved dual-camera system, similar to that found on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and these sensors will both feature Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). We are also likely to see the brand-new Snapdragon 845 at the helm in some markets, with Samsung’s own Exynos chipset leading the way in other global markets.

As for the design, the report claims that the overall design of the Galaxy S9 will be similar to its predecessor, but instead of an 84% screen-to-body ratio, the Galaxy S9 will feature an almost 90% ratio. This means that practically all of the front of the device will be covered by a display, save for the selfie camera and earpiece. We’re just hoping that Samsung doesn’t opt for a “notch” similar to that found with the iPhone X.
