Facebook Messenger now lets you video chat with up to 6 people
Facebook Messenger is so far ahead of the messaging game, at this point it’s going to be hard for others to catch up. After recently launching video games and Snapchat-style expiring messages, the messaging app is now introducing Group Video Chat with up to 6 people. The update is rolling out today on both Android and iOS platforms with Facebook saying it was their most user requested features ever (likely since they first introduced video calling over a year ago).
3D masks are iOS-only for now, but coming soon to Android
Initiating a group video call is easy, just open your desired group chat (or create a new one), and select who you’d like to ring individually, or call the entire group and see who picks up. Although only 6 people can join the call at a time, more members of a group chat can listen in or join via a voice call. With Facebook capping group chats at 50 people, this could be a very real possibility for some.
It’s pretty straight forward but the real test is the actual performance of Facebook Messenger’s group video calls under various network conditions and data speeds. This is easily where Hangouts floundered, so if anyone has tried it out the new feature yet, feel free to drop us a line down below.
