Today’s the day, folks! After much anticipation, the arrival of Generation 2 Pokemon — those that launched with Pokemon Silver and Gold over 16 years ago — are now official in Pokemon GO. A new video has already gone live on the official Pokemon GO YouTube channel announcing the big news, but before you get too excited, you may want to lower those expectations a little bit.
First off, the only officially confirmed Gen 2 Pokemon are that of Togepi, PIchu and “several others,” but only through the game’s hatching system. Yup. That means this little fellas can’t actually be caught in the wild, making us wonder if the game’s tagline should be updated (“Gotta hatch ’em all,” perhaps?).
Be all that as it may, Niantic did announce that — starting now through December 29th, 2016 — you’ll be able to find and catch a new festive Pikachu wearing a little Santa Clause hat. It’s so adorable you’ll forget all about not being able to gain access to Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. Who the hell needs ’em, right?
To be fair, Niantic does mention that more Gen 2 Pokemon will be coming to GO over next few months, so it’s possible we can still see our favorites being sprinkled into the game over time. One thing is clear, Niantic definitely wants to drag / milk this thing for as long as possible, which probably makes the most sense from a business standpoint. We’ll have to wait and see how the general public takes the news, in the meantime, voice your thoughts down below.
