Last month, Google began rolling out 4K UHD content to the Play Movies library, although there was no official announcement. Starting today, it seems Google has decided to pull the trigger on releasing more 4K content for everyone to enjoy.
Starting today, there are over 120 different titles available for purchase or rental in 4K UHD. These titles include Star Trek Beyond, The Secret Life of Pets, and more. However, the catch here is the price hike that these titles will be subjected to.
Previously, titles were able to be rented for just $3.99 or purchased for between $14.99 – $19.99. With 4K content, the price will be raised to $7.99 for rentals and can be purchased at prices between $24.99 and $29.99. The base price of HD content will be lowered to $12.99 for older content, but we’ll more than likely begin seeing a different price for new content.
The new section within the Play Store is beginning to roll out to users in Canada and the US, so it’ll just be a matter of time before you see the option on your mobile devices. Furthermore, Google has announced the release of the Google Play Movies & TV application for Samsung Smart TVs released in 2016. This will allow you to view all of your favorite 4K content without ever needing to pull out your smartphones.
Finally, Google has decided to giveaway one 4K movie to those who purchase the new Chromecast Ultra. Once you receive your new Chromecast, you will be able to navigate to the Chromecast Ultra offer page here and redeem your free movie.
