Android celebrates its 8th birthday as Google teases something “sweet” for tomorrow

It may sound odd, but in some ways Android has a few different birthdays. November 5th, 2007 is the day we saw Google’s Andy Rubin announce the Open Handset Alliance — and the Android mobile operating system along with it — but it wasn’t until September 23rd, 2008 that Google released the Android 1.0 SDK. This was also the same day the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) was made official, a full 8 years ago today.

In honor of Android’s 8th birthday, Google seems to be teasing something on their Android Twitter account, mentioning that they’ve whipped up “something sweet” for tomorrow — not today. What that ends up being is anyone’s guess, the post on Twitter just shows an Android figurine baking something (KitKats, Marshmallows, and Nougat are pictured), but we have a feeling it will be some sort of tribute video or possibly a promo of some sort. Of course, that has stopped some from speculating. We’re seeing people post everything from Nougat 7.1, to Allo/Duo integration, and everything in between.

We’re proud to say that we at Phandroid have been following Android since the beginning, covering all angles of the platform exhaustively over the past 8+ years. It’s been a fun ride and we’re not going anywhere. Next week, Google’s rumored Pixel smartphones are expected to make their debut and as always, we’ll be covering the event live at their October 4th event in San Francisco. Stay tuned.
