It’s time to say goodbye. It’s been a long run, and we’ve had more good times than I can remember, but it’s over. We knew the end of support for the Nexus 5 was coming, but with today’s release of Android Nougat, it’s officially over.
Earlier this year, Google published a schedule for how long current devices would continue to be supported, and when the company would stop guaranteeing updates. The Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) are both on that list, with a couple more devices coming up around the corner.
Google has maintained that any Nexus device would continue to receive updates for at least 2 years after it was made available on the Google Store. After those 2 years are up, it’s done-zo. This doesn’t mean that the device won’t continue to receive Android Security Patches, as Google has promised up to 3 years of support for those, so you can continue to run Android Marshmallow and be secure.
The next two devices that will see their life cycles come to an end are the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, which were both released in October of 2014. While still able to get all the great things that come with Android Nougat, it may be time to hang up the cleats soon.
