Last week Google took the wraps off its latest feature for Android, Nearby. This service allows various applications or websites to communicate with your device, and give users an easy way to access information from various sources. Now, users will be able to experience Nearby in all its glory.
The latest version of Google Play Services has started rolling out, which brings support for Nearby. In order for Nearby to work correctly, users will need to opt-in, so that your device can start communicating with nearby Beacons.
Once you have opted-in, you will begin receiving notifications from various vendors or stores, or even a Chromecast device. In addition to being notified of a coupon or special happening at the grocery store, it seems that Google is already looking to expand the Nearby capabilities.
An APK-teardown performed by the folks at Android Police has revealed that there is some code hidden that would allow peer-to-peer file sharing. You can already do this with the help of NFC, but it would be even easier to share that video from last weekend with the help of Nearby.
This same APK teardown also revealed some updates that will be coming to Google Wallet. This may lead to some Nearby functionalities in the future, once Nearby has gained some more support from various locations.
