A new month means a new Android security patch, as well as an updated Android Distribution chart from the Android Developers blog. Last month, Android Marshmallow was running on just 7.5% of devices across the world, but has seen a decent jump up to 10%.
When comparing these numbers to Android Lollipop at the same time last year, the software was at a 12.4% rate of adoption, solidifying that Android Marshmallow is still slow on the uptake. Android Lollipop this year sits right above 35%, with Android KitKat at a whopping 31.6%.
However, with more devices from last year such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 starting to receive updates, the numbers should continue to grow. Unfortunately, there have been issues with those updates rolling out, which may have slowed adoption a bit.
Looking at these numbers, it’s definitely still easy to tell that there’s a real problem with fragmentation across Android devices. It’s also extremely surprising that there are still any devices out there running Android 2.2 Froyo, or Android Gingerbread.
We were hoping to see some type of news at Google I/O 2016 in regards to Google’s plans to fix this issue, but there has been nothing new on that front.
