LG confirms always-on display for the LG G5

LG has always been the manufacturer who has no problem confirming details about their forthcoming phones before big announcements, and nothing’s going to change for the impending LG G5. The company posted an official teaser to Facebook that tells us to expect an always-on display.

The tease was carried out with a GIF that illustrates a phone with a semi-lit display showing the time, date and the latest notifications. Nothing else about the phone except for some nicely rounded corners could be noticed.

We’ve long wondered when LG and others might start hopping onto the always-on bandwagon. Motorola did it to great success back when the original Moto X launched, and we imagined many others who opted to use AMOLED displays (which light up only the pixels it needs) would eventually follow suit.

LG’s February 21st event in Barcelona is sure to be a must-see affair. The company is confident in its ability to match wits with Samsung, but it remains to be seen if this will be the year they can steal enough thunder to make their South Korean rival sweat.
