This year’s CES has been big on VR and the shiny new 360 cameras that come along with it, but Sony is out to prove that you don’t need such fancy gadgets to capture stunning, immersive video. No, you only need the power of twelve Sony Xperia Z5 Compact handsets, all set to record simultaneously in 4K.
OK, so perhaps the dozen Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones isn’t the most cost effective way to take 360 video at home, but the resulting “48K” video is certainly a beauty. It’s best enjoyed using your smartphone paired with Google Cardboard, but even a standard 2D viewing reveals impressively crisp and detailed video.
How did they do it? They used 3D printing to create a custom mount that perfectly positioned each Xperia device. The rig was setup high in the Alps to capture some pretty excellent scenery, and the result was stitched together to create the seamless 360 video you see above. If you happen to be at this year’s CES, Sony is looping the footage on a panoramic screen encircling their booth on the show floor, and the full setup, Xperia Z5 compact handsets and all, is being showcased as well.
