Google Play Family Groups make it easy for your friends and family to mooch off of you
Google is finally bringing family plans to Google Play Music, but that’s not the only new thing for families. You’ll soon be able to create a “family” on Google Play, and in that family group will be a “family payment method.” Essentially, this will allow everyone in your family group to use one payment method for apps, games, books, movies, and more.
Your family group can have up to six members; one member will be the “family manager.” The family manager must be 18 years or older and have a valid credit card. That last bit is important because the manager is who decides the family payment method. If anyone in the group makes a purchase, the manager can see it.
In order to join a family group, you must meet a few requirements. You must be 13 years or older, have a Google account, live in the same country as the manager, and you can’t be a member of any other family groups. Google only allows users to switch groups once a year. Choose wisely.
The family manager is responsible for all purchases in the group. Don’t let someone in your group if you think they will abuse your payment method. By default, in-app purchases are turned off for all members. They’ll have to as for approval every time. Family groups should be great for people with kids. It makes the digital world a little more like the real world, where you can pick up the bill for a group of people.
