Motorola is in the business of selling devices themselves now, and a retail store is the perfect way to get their phones and accessories in people’s hands to convince them to buy one. The company has announced plans to open a retail store in Chicago this holiday season.
Called the Moto Shop and opening November 7th (the extravagant GRAND opening is on November 14th), the store is “experiential” in that it carries itself less like a boring collection of boxes and shelves, and more as a place to learn about Motorola’s products, play with them and get up close and personal. It’s the Apple Store, really, but just a tad cooler.
One of the unique things they’ve done is created a “drop zone,” a place where you can test the DROID Turbo 2’s shatterproof display against a variety of hard floor types.
Concrete, wood, marble — it’s all there to give the phone a beating and prove to you that the display really is shatterproof. There’s also a small photo studio area to take your beauty shot on one of their phones’ cameras.
You’ll also get a full look at the Moto 360 and all the Moto Maker customization options that you would have available to you on their website. That’s especially important for folks who refuse to buy stuff like this before trying it on and getting an in-person look at it.
It sounds great, and we hope Motorola has plans to open more stores down the line. If you’re in the Chicago area you’ll be able to find the store at 108 N. State St. (Suite 140 at Block 37). The store is open 10am to 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am to 6PM on Sundays.
