Samsung’s Gear S2 is off to a hot start! Well… maybe. It’s been reported that the company sold out of pre-order stock in their home region of South Korea in just 2 hours. Surely that must make it a hit, right?
Not if the entire stock consists of just 1,000 units. Don’t get me wrong — that’s not to say it isn’t impressive. But 1,000 units is hardly enough to consider anything a success this early.
Samsung won’t gain much in the way of brownie points for this early performance, but what it will do is help them better gauge demand for the full launch. This’ll help them dodge the issues they had with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, where they misjudged demand for the latter and failed to produce enough units because of it.
The Samsung Gear S2 is bound to be a very intriguing smart watch option even if Android Wear-based devices are getting better and better. It’s circular, so that turns a lot of heads on its own. It also now works with any Android phone running Android 4.4 or higher — a first for the Gear lineup — so those who don’t own Samsung’s devices will be able to use it.
But with all that putting the company in a position to make a splash, we’re not going to take 1,000 units selling out as gospel that they’ve hit gold. Let’s wait for some more lofty numbers before heading in that direction.
