In the age of limited data plans you have to choose wisely when it comes to streaming away from the friendly confines of your home WiFi. Many Android apps allow you to download media for offline enjoyment. This is common among streaming music apps and podcast players. What if you could do the same with YouTube videos?

Along with the launch of Android One in India, Google has announced offline playback for YouTube. Within the coming weeks much of YouTube will be available offline in India. Users will be able to download videos and keep them on their device to play whenever they please. This is a huge deal for India, but we can’t help but feel a little jealous. There is no official word on whether this will come to other countries. Hopefully if all goes well in India it will become a standard feature.

Ever since I flipped open my first phone I've been obsessed with the devices. I've dabbled in other platforms, but Android is where I feel most at home.

  1. Hmmm…not sure how that’ll end up working in the US. Copyright nightmare, when allowing downloading.

    1. India doesn’t care about copyright. Basically every movie they’ve made is available in its entirety on YouTube already.

      1. Most countries outside of the US aren’t as strict, if strict at all. I was more-so addressing any possibilities outside India and in particular the US. Many people don’t realize all the legalities that go behind content being available for stream in youtube. Allowing for download opens up a whole can of worms.

  2. This would be nice…. But I would be MUCH happier if Google enabled Listen Only mode for YouTube. That way if I want to browse the web and listen to my phandroid podcast, or heaven forbid, turn the screen off to save on battery life or data, I could! :D
