We’ve been hearing a lot about the upcoming Sony Xperia Z3 ever since “leaked” images of the device began sprouting up around the net. Said to become official during next month’s IFA 2014 in Berlin, we were left scratching our heads as to the phone’s sudden release. Given we have yet to see or hear any official word on a Sony Xperia Z2 coming to the states (rumors point to a Verizon exclusive release arriving soon), we’re sure many of you aren’t getting your hopes we’ll ever see the upcoming model arriving in the states anytime soon. But not so fast…
Apparently, the folks over at TechnoBuffalo heard from their own reliable source that the phone has already been picked up by T-Mobile and will launch shortly after its September unveiling. So, why on earth would Sony be gearing up to launch a redesigned followup only 6 months after the previous model? It’s possible the Z2 was already promised to Verizon and in order for Sony to bring their smartphone lineup to the US they needed an entirely new model. This could also explain why the phone is rumored to have largely the same exact specs as the Sony Xperia Z2, only featuring a more smooth, all metal frame. New name. Mostly the same internals.
Of course, nothing has been confirmed at this time although TechnoBuffalo assures us their sources have proven reliable in the past. Hopefully we’ll hear more about the phone (whether officially or through leaks) as IFA 2014 approaches. Until then, I’ll be enjoying my newly purchased Sony Xperia Z2 (yes, I’m pretty much in love with it).
The Xperia Z2 is available in the USA right now in the Sony USA Store.
Just checked and the Z2 is definitely not in the US store.
Yes it is it came out a little while ago.
the Z2 IS IN the sony online store. go to unlocked phones and it is available for 699.
yes it is. check under unlocked phones. But I still wouldn’t pay $699 for it, unless you needed a waterproof phone and in that case you can get the s5 or s5 active at a lower cost.
Ah thanks, you have to go to sony.com then navigate to it. Sony mobile and the mobile store doesn’t have it. Sony is such a poorly run company they cant even have their website updated accurately.
It’s strange, I can’t find anywhere that lets you purchase it.

The washed out screen on the Z and Z1s was AWFUL. Let’s hope Sony fixes this for the Z3.
Z2 improved it greatly
Z2 and Z1 compact already fixed it.
So, why on earth would Sony be gearing up to launch a redesigned followup only 6 months after the previous model http://x.vu/XWzU43
Except it’s not foggy at all. They update their top phone roughly every 6 months.

I must admit, Checkmate Phandroid. Thanks Obama!
It’s too bad that the g3 will still outsell this repeat phone that looks exactly like the z, not to mention loses so much screen with that bezel.
You guys already reported a while back that Sony was moving to two flagship device releases each year…!
As a Z1 Compact user… Sony phones are amazing, and I have been an Android rooting fanboy all the way back to the G1. I am sold on them for life so long as they keep making equal spec’d Compact editions of their flagships because I just don’t want a 5.2″ phone…
I got my Z2 on Monday. Awesome device. I sold my GS4 GPE and OnePlus One and couldn’t be happier. Price aside, it’s still the best all around phone released this year.
All the reviews I have seen relating to Sony Z2’s camera being subpar… is that really the case?
The camera is good if you know how to use manual settings. I wish Sony would cut back on the post processing though because they process the hell out of the pictures you take. Just like any other phone camera the quality takes a nose dive in low light situations.
Just call it the Z2s already, not the Z3 :)
Called it……..
If only Z3 Compact comes to T-Mo…
T-Mobile USA or Europe?
Why don’t they just do what palm used to do back in the day? There was the treo 750 and the treo 750 v. The “V” stood for vodafone.
