The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn’t hit theaters until May 2nd, but you can get a head start web-slinging fun with Gameloft’s official movie tie-in game, now available for Android devices. An open-world action adventure, you take control of Spidey as he swings throughout New York, apprehending random thugs, eventually going head-to-head against big name villains like Venom, Green Goblin, Electro, Black Cat and Screwball. Don’t worry about the game offering any spoilers, Gameloft says the game features an original story that only expands on the movie, isn’t actually based on it.

Because the general consensus these days is that freemium titles suck (we agree for the most part), it looks like Gameloft is biting the bullet and making this one a paid title. That means at $5, you’ll get some of the best graphics in mobile, weighing in at a hefty 1.25GB after installation. The game looks good, there’s no denying that. But that means you’ll want a beefy phone to keep everything running smoothly. The game actually brought our Samsung Galaxy S5 to its knees, with choppy frame rates and the phone reaching near-dangerous temperatures. Your mileage may vary, so take caution.

Keep in mind an internet connection is required to play and yes, there are still in-app purchases for those that can’t stand working for unlockables like new Spider-Man suits. If all that sounds kosher to you, you can download the game via the Google Play Store link below.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Chris : you hate the S5 we get it. Geezzzzzz…….;)

    1. The S5 is garbage… my GF will be returning that mess for an M8 thankfully.

  2. If it brought the S5 to its knees, what will it do to my Note 3, ugh.

  3. didnt even make my m8 flinch ?

    1. Really now? That’s good to hear.

But I do know that stock-wise, OEM’s have been known to throttle the CPU at lower temperatures then necessary. So that could be the case for the GS5 and other devices.

  4. *Impulse buy*

IDC if I like it or not. It’s like $5. LoL!! I will just bring my lunch tomorrow. =.P

  5. Odd, plays smooth as butter on the LG G2 and it only has the 800 Snapdragon. Funny

  6. I hate games that require an internet connection – they’re useless for me on 90% of my commute.

  7. Works fine on the GS4.. Been playing for hours.. No issues with chopiness or heat..

  8. Immersive mode compatible? Thinking of copping this for my G2…

Edit – oh I’m sorry, the S5 is garbage, I forgot to mention that… my bad everyone.

  9. Screw Gameloft. I’m not buying another one of their buggy messes. I’ve bought a number of their games that have had game-ending bugs. Missing objectives, non-functioning portals, switches that won’t flip, all things that have halted my progress in Gameloft games. Add to it that you pay $5 and there’s still IAP? Not only no, but F you.
