We’ve been on the hunt for awesome OUYA games (check OUYAboards.com), and although it hasn’t been the easiest task, several gems have popped up. We’re guessing/hoping a load more gems will pop up at tonight’s launch event. Fans of the old-school Mystery/Action Puzzlers will definitely want to check out Whispering Willows, a game that we briefly demoed this week:
The Whispering Willows concept seems great: the further you get into the game, the more the story unfolds, and the deeper you dive into the narrative. Your character is Elena and your goal is to save your father. At the beginning of the game, you learn that you’re able to astrally project your inner-self, allowing your “ghost” form to travel in interesting ways and perform tasks that you couldn’t do in your human form. By helping ghosts and solving puzzles, you learn more about the Willows mansion (the game’s setting) and gradually move towards saving your father’s life. You’re essentially a ghost whisperer.
An early example of the ghostish puzzle gameplay is finding a locked door. But there is a crack above the door. Summon your astral projection, direct your ghost through the nooks and crannies, and let yourelf in from the other side of the door. While this is an obvious A to B logic line, the entire idea that you can project yourself lends it to all different kinds of puzzles and challenges that should get harder and more complex as the game develops.
Whispering Willow originally began as a Kickstarter project and the version we received was in Alpha stages. The game launches on OUYA but will also come out on Android, iOS, and is developed in Unity.
