Out of nowhere, LG releases Ice Cream Sandwich source code for the Optimus 2X

20

There’s an old saying: “Better late than never.” Seems LG is embracing that old adage after finally releasing the Ice Cream Sandwich source code for the LG Optimus 2X SU660 (Korean version). The device is one of few ever to see a firmware jump from Froyo, to Gingerbread, and now after 2 years… Ice Cream Sandwich.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you’re into the hacking and modding of your phone, you can now expect (hopefully) fully functional AOSP ROMs to begin popping up around the various Android forums for the international version of the 2X. But it’s not just Optimus 2X users who are rejoicing, those with T-Mobile G2X’s are hopeful that ROM devs will be able to cook something up for their devices as well, though that still remains to be seen. Either way, I’m happy for you guys. It’s long overdue. Oh, and good job, LG. You did the right thing.

Thanks, Zahy!

  1. Now maybe we can convince motorola… since they f’ed all us Atrix 4G owners over. I shouldn’t leave out other tegra 2 owners too.

  2. I hope that whatever manufacturer dips their top into full releasing their code on launch day sells a butt load of phones to encourage the industry as a whole to make the move over to an open friendly nature.

But then, does it matter to many here about custom ROMs?

  3. Updating 2 year old device.. Good job, LG! Now I’m happy that they’re making the Next Nexus.

    1. Well they make some very nice hardware but at least we know Google has their hands in the software for the Nexus.

      1. Ya, their biggest problem is solved by Nexus Program… I’ll get a Nexus 4 as soon as it comes

  5. Now get your G Slate updated! It was your flagship tablet for crying out loud LG! It was the first Android tablet in the US with an IPS display where as the Xoom’s display looked washed out compared to the iPad in stores.

  6. Whaaaaaaaaaat (Peter Griffin) I honestly thought I would be jumping from the G2x to the Note 2 with out every getting a proper taste of ICS. Heck, devs might be even able to get JB fully working with this source code. Here’s to hoping!

  7. Only the OG Atrix left now……………

  8. not exactly out of nowhere, we’ve been expecting it for a few weeks now.
and while they are slow with updates they are usually much quicker with releasing the source code.
I think the optimus black got the source released 2 days after the update became available.

arcee supposedly has been sitting on a CM10 for a while now, so custom roms shouldn’t take long.

    1. In accordance with the GPL it should have been released at the same time as the update. However, 2 days is still better compared to other OEMs.

  9. Haha, go figure that this phone would finally get the possibility of an update right after I finally ditched the thing for a GS3.

  10. LG is trying to gain fans again lol. Negative.

Yes, it is fully functional CM10 (Jelly Bean) on the Optimus 2X!

    1. How do you know it is fully functional?

      1. It has been for a while. RC had it made for a month from his inside LG sources but was not allowed to publish as long as LG hasn’t given a green light or he would jeopardize his good contacts. Someone on Xda that knows RC wrote about it on Xda a while ago.

  12. The T-Mobile G2X will be fully supported by the kernel source! XDA is reporting that Harsh was able to compile a G2X kernel with NO issues from this source for ICS. JB may be an issue but ICS will be on the G2X within a few days. WOOT!

    1. source?

  13. Just got my ice-cream-sandwich updaye for my LG Spectrum……… Nice…. C-dale, IL.

  14. When will we get an update
