Verizon Galaxy Nexus may soon get software update

28

Images are floating around the internet showing an IMM76Q build is being installed on a Galaxy Nexus. We haven’t heard anything official from Verizon, and from the looks of things this might be running on a test unit.

There’s no way to tell what this upgrade brings outside of “enhancements,” but there is reason to believe it will be the update that strips out the unified search functionality so as to not step on Apple’s toes. Until we get official word from Verizon we won’t be able to believe that for sure. [via Droid-Life]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Not even saying this to be annoying, I just want to know for personal knowledge. What in this photo suggests this is a test unit?

    1. Not annoying….It’s a valid query.

    2. Check out the original story. Apparently the phone has a serial number above the speaker grill. It’s hard to see, but it’s there.

      1. If you click the image above you can see it better.

    3. Copied and pasted from Droid-Life ”
As was pointed out, the phone picture above has a serial number up top and is likely a test device.”

    4. I appreciate the clarification guys, thank you.

  2. I’m wondering if international Galaxy Nexus models will be getting the same updates that dumb down the universal search.

Being that I’m unlocked and rooted…it may not be a bad idea to jump ship to Cyanogen if worse comes to worst.

  3. Ha! The only timely update the vzw galaxy nexus gets and it takes away functionality. :P

    1. Exactly,,,what BS if rumour is true…….no testing required for that!!!!!!! However, it its jelly bean…ten thumbs up verizon haha

    2. LOL another good comment

    3. This comment hits the nail on the head. The only update Verizon is quick to work on is the one that takes features away. Do they not realize that many purchasers of this phone exclusively did so because they wanted the most timely updates? Can you imagine how long it will take to get Jellybean on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus given how long it took for the very minor 4.04 update to come out? My suggestion for those that haven’t done so is to go on Youtube, watch an easy to follow rooting guide like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSmd9ZbUH50, and flash one of the very stable Jellybean ROMs for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus posted here:
      http://rootzwiki.com/forum/362-vzw-galaxy-nexus-development/.

      1. February .. the first version of the 4.0.4 update was February and the 2nd build was almost a month before it was finally pushed with no changes.

        1. unlock
        2. root
        3. it’s a mini computer so treat it as you would with Windows, OS X or Linux and take some responsiblity instead of complaining.

        /end story.

  4. How about I don;t update..apple can kiss my a**

    1. LOL! Good one.

  5. @ 945 kb, im sure its just a modified search apk, i wonder i i can titantium back up the original and restore it after the update…

    1. interesting…

  6. running jb now, no way i will release that update.

  7. Already running 4.1 on my VZW Galaxy Nexus. No need for any “enhancements” from Verizon. =)

    1. Yep. Sticking with MoDaCo’s JB ROM for toro until either VZW drops it or we get source. I’m done crack-flashing for a while.

Assuming you don’t start building kernels again. ;-)

      1. I wish I had the time to do that, but I don’t. I keep telling myself I’m going to make time, but it never happens.

        1. Heh… no worries. Just “poking the bear”, so to speak.

Good devs were badly needed back in the day with the Fascinate. Not so much with the G’Nex…we’ve got everyone and their mother making roms for this thing it seems. No lack of options here.

          1. Very true. I probably won’t have to come out of retirement for the Nexus 7 either as everyone and their mom will be releasing ROMs and kernels for that device too. ;) We’ll see. No promises though. Hehe.

          2. I’m gonna hold you to that. ;-)

  8. How long before apple starts sueing dev’s of custom roms that don’t remove their so called patented enhancements

    1. lol…don’t give apple ideas…

  9. One guess what I won’t be applying to my phone, and if it gets pushed out and applied to my phone without my accepting/acknowledgement I guess I have no choice but to–

OH WAIT. This isn’t Apple. I can just download one of HUNDREDS OF CUSTOM ROMS that are a million times better than stock ROMS that will do whatever I want it to do.

I have tried, truly and honestly I have, to not be the serial-CWM-flasher that I used to be on the OG Droid… But if they push, I will push back. This is my device, and I refuse to be put upon by the whims of a judge and an update gets pushed out within a week that removes functionality–but it takes SIX MONTHS to get an update to roll out that fixes real and legitimate bugs.

  10. Hopefully is not to include the annoying “turn on your wi-fi” notification on the notification bar that i have read about….

  11. Anyone who bought a Nexus device should and probably is already running the latest firmware through “unofficial channels”. Anyone who bought a Nexus device without the knowledge of rooting and flashing deserves to wait the time it takes Verizon to approve it.
