In Case You Were Wondering, Samsung Galaxy S3 Is Outfitted With Gorilla Glass 2

After seeing a demo for ourselves in person during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, it has now come to our attention that Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 can officially be found on the Samsung Galaxy S3. Corning announced the news today saying,

“We are pleased to offer our customers the thin elegance and refined style of the GALAXY S III using Corning Gorilla Glass 2. New Corning Gorilla Glass 2 is an ideal solution for Samsung’s high-quality smartphones, enabling a superior touch experience and a lightweight and slim design, with the damage and scratch resistance consumers have come to expect.”

It was originally announced that the first GG2 equipped devices would be arriving around May, and it looks like the Galaxy S3 will be one of the first. In case you needed a refresher, Gorilla Glass 2 features all the strength of original, only it’s 20% thinner than before. With less glass between the user and the device, touch sensitivity, as well as clarity, should improve.

  1. It has Gorilla Glass too? LoL!! I just had to be a loser and make the joke.

  2. prone to breakage? If less glass?

    1. Less glass but all the strengff!

  3. I thought they had some joint venture to make the glass for it? Or is that still to be seen?

Also, now the S3 is out, can we have some rumours on an update for the Note please? Same size, A15, 1080p screen (or 1900×1200) would be lovely. In time for Christmas maybe?

    1. Note? You mean the Galaxy Note 2? Or Galaxy Note 10.1?

      1. i think he means Note2, but i’m not certain.

        1. Yes, Note 2 please.

Was just hoping the S3 finally being released would clear the rumour decks a bit and we’d start maybe seeing plans for a new Note.

Having played with the S3 today (guy at work found the last shop in town with any in stock, at lunchtime on day of release…), I like it a LOT. I really hope they put that design language into a Note sequel – there’s something about the feel of the S3 in the hand that’s just… right.

    2. It’ll be released in October at the latest, Samsung wont combine launches with the Note 2 and the Nexus 2 if the November 5th date for the five Nexus devices is accurate. As far as an update, Exynos 5250 and Super AMOLED HD 1080p are more or less guaranteed if they’re going to compete with S4 Pro and LCD2 1080p from HTC and LG, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see incremental improvements like a slightly larger screen, thinner build, lighter weight, larger battery etc. and maybe on screen buttons as a design preference for “Phablets.” I don’t think Q3/Q4 phones are going to be surprising, we should see A-15, LTE, 2gb RAM, 1080p and larger batteries as design standards, No idea on cameras, the megapixel war may finally have a cease fire.

      1. Maybe they’ll make a Samsung Galaxy Nexus Note?

  4. Stumble this link where you can find in a small and preliminary tests of resistance ofS3 with the Galaxy’s Gorilla Glass 2, all produced by the staff of Samsung Italy.

    1. I saw no “crashing” whatsoever in that video. Just screen taps with a key -_-

  5. So what’s the difference between this and the Corning Lotus Glass. You know what we need AP? a third party to test all these different materials and compare them all :)! or at least a text diagram….

  6. Does the HTC One X have gorilla glass 1 or 2?

  7. I thought the HTC one x had g2. Think I saw that on Wikipedia

  8. I wasn’t wondering, but thanks.

Make a 4.0″ phone with pure ICS and I’ll get that instead of the iPhone 5.

  9. I’m calling for a drop test on concrete.

  10. The HTC One X also has gorilla glass 2.
