Motorola Atrix 4G Receiving Over-The-Air Update Starting Today

13

Our friends at BriefMobile reported a few days ago that the Atrix 4G would soon be receiving it’s Android 2.3.x update, bringing the software up to version 4.5.141. Well, that special day for Atrix users is February 7th which just so happens to be tomorrow (today). TalkAndroid received further confirmation of this with a message from Motorola stating,

“Tomorrow [February 7th] after 12 Central/10 Pacific, you will receive a pop-up message on your phone that will mark the beginning of  the software pre-release test.”

The update will bring with it the usual bug fixes as well as:

  • Latest Android security fixes from Android 2.3.6+
  • Bluetooth voice commands while the device is asleep
  • Improvements to the Messaging and Contacts applications (unspecified)
  • WiFi settings update and AT&T Mobile Hotspot usage built-in
  • Increases in stability, power management

Kind of a bummer for those expecting Android 4.0 but something tells me it could be awhile before we see the Atrix receive a frosty Ice Cream Sandwich update. That is, if you forgo the easy root method and have something against CyanogenMod.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. “software pre-release test”? Hope you don’t f-up my phone. I’d rather opt out for now, besides I have a faux123 kernel and the phone is considerably snappier and less power hungry than before.

  2. When will the 1080p playback and recording feature being rolled out?

  3. Joy! A phone released a year ago is NOW moving from a 2 year old OS to a 1 year old OS.

    1. Actually this is the 4th update for the Atrix that was released at the end of February last year.  It has been on 2.3.4 since July.  I think this phone has been updated pretty well.  Now I’m just hoping it goes to ICS at some point!

  4. Unfortunately, Motorola has fallen so far back in market share that it can no longer afford to provide reasonable updates, such as ICS, on a one year old phone. I give up – switched my wife over to a Samsung Galaxy II Skyrocket and am just waiting for my contract period to be up so I can get off the Motorola slow train myself. BTW – the Samsung Skyrocket is one REALLY NICE phone, but you do have to watch it’s power consumption.

    1. the vivid skyrocket and nitro are all power hungry beasts lol it is the big drawback but the phones are so sick who cares! (like a viper that only has a ten gallon gas tank…. It’s still a damn viper lol)

  5. I guess no one takes seriously that confidentiality agreement at all anymore huh?

  6. Got my atrix bootloader unlocked. What a pain having a locked bootloader. Once unlocked the beauty of the atrix shines. Rooted, now my atrix is running Redpill hybrid v1 on cm7 kernel with ICS theme. Motoblur is gone (did not like it). This phone rocks now.

  7. Hope its getting closer to ICS i got mine feb 22nd it will be a year old for my Atrix time to update.

  8. Is this a false rumor or something??? coz, I still don’t see the update on my phone after trying many times. It still says “Your device is up to date”.  :-(

  9. Ha I love the guy that thinks motorola is slow at updates and went to Samsung, wait till he finds out Samsung doesn’t know what an update is.

  10. Software pre release I was thinking it was the official release. That means I gotta wait another onto or so.

  11. Where is this update? I haven’t seen anything.
