Motorola RAZR Developer Edition Will Provide an Unlockable/Relockable Bootloader

16

Motorola have just announced that they will be bringing a developer-friendly device to Europe – the Motorola RAZR Developer Edition! The device will feature an unlockable and relockable bootloader for those who like to tinker with their phones to their hearts’ content.

The device is available for European customers today via this link for 500 euros. After buying it Motorola will give you all the instructions you need to free your device of its shackles. Motorola plans to bring a developer-friendly device to the US but didn’t give any specifics as to which device that would be.

We’re wondering what’s going on with their bootloader unlock program that they’re supposed to be bringing to their devices already available for sale but perhaps this device is their way of testing the waters before doing so. In any case, we’re glad to see Motorola taking positive steps forward. [Motorola]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. … promises, broken promises, where is the promised open bootloader for my eu retail razr, moto? where, my dear Christy Wyatt, where?

  2. I’d love a razr maxx with an unlockable bootloader. I have zero problem with that; they should do it the way they did the Atrix if it helps them sleep better at night, I have no problem voiding my warranty for complete administrator/root access. A phone like the DRM with an unlockable bootloader would have a ton of dev-support.

  3. doubt any carrier will subsidize it so it’ll cost near/around $700….
do they really need 3 versions of the same phone?
RAZR, RAZR MAX and now a RAZR Dev phone…..
What next? RAZR MAXX Dev phone?

    1. I certainly hope so – don’t want the razr unless i can get a hackable one with extended battery (on verizion please :3 )

  4. Maybe somebody can get the program to unlock the bootloader on a non dev phone by using the same method but little bit of tinkering

  5. How nice of Moto..Users rejoice!!!

This is why I don’t buy Motorola..

  6. Let’s hope the ROM for this is available to developers like me who already bought a “regular” RAZR.  Great idea announcing this phone a good 2 months after the initial release :-/

  7. Another razr

  8. Making us rebuy our phones at full price….sorry NOT a idea in the right direction. This is a spit in the face to the dev community.

  9. Don’t you worry folks I work for Motorola corporate . We are hard at work on a solution to unlock the bootloaders from the atrix up to now. Were testing the dev edition first of droid razr . We have a tool called moto-dev kit. It’s still in beta but when it’s Released March 2nd will be the best tool. Should you tinkerers out there brick your phone, delete software, this can reload everything to stock in about hour time. Just be patient Motorola enthusiasts, we appreciate you all!

    1. I hope you don’t work at Moto because I would bet a lot of money that employees are not allowed to comment on any blog discussing Moto anything, especially unreleased software/hardware.

  10. IF MOTOROLA DON’T UNLOCK MY RAZR’S BOOTLOADER AND KEEP THEIR PROMISE, I WILL SELL ALL OF MY MOTOROLA DEVICES, I WILL CLOSE MY MOTOROLA FAN FORUM WHICH HAS 3000 MEMBERS AND MANY VISITORS, I WILL EVER NEVER BUY A MOTOROLA AGAIN AND GIVE BAD FEEDBACK TO PEOPLE ABOUT MOTOROLA WHENEVER I FIND AN OPPURTUNITY.

ps : i am a motorolan for 10 years, bought maybe 50 different moto models till now..

  11. I can assure you I work at Motorola corporate in the Verizon building.
