Although we’ve gotten both official and unofficial confirmation of the November 17th UK launch date for the highly-desired Galaxy Nexus before, Samsung’s keen on making it formal and official with a press release. Various retailers will be carrying the device with carriers soon to follow. Unfortunately they didn’t throw those of us on the other side of the pond a bone, but we’ll be patiently waiting for word on North America’s sweet treat. Read on for full press details.
4th November 2011, London, UK – Samsung today announced the first smartphone to feature Android™ 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a 4.65” HD Super AMOLED display, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, will be available in the UK from Thursday 17th November.
The Galaxy Nexus™ is the first smartphone to feature a 4.65’’ HD Super AMOLED display with a market-leading resolution of 720p (1280×720), ensuring vivid colours and excellent picture clarity. The Galaxy Nexus also comes with a 5 megapixel camera and new rounded design that measures just 8.94mm thick and features a minimal 4.29mm screen bezel.
The Galaxy Nexus features the latest version of the Android platform, 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which brings an entirely new look and feel to Android. It has a redesigned user interface with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, NFC support and a full web browsing experience, while introducing new innovations such as ‘Face Unlock’, which uses facial recognition to unlock your phone. It also comes with integrated Google+™, allowing you to ‘hang out’ with friends and talk over Google+ Messenger. Google™’s services are connected to the cloud, keeping your email, contacts, and other data synced across your devices.
The latest handset from Samsung and Google is designed to provide a “pure Google” experience and users will be the first to receive software upgrades as they become available. It also features a number of Google Mobile services, including: Android Market™, Gmail™, Google Maps™ 5.11 with 3D maps and turn-by-turn navigation, Google Earth™, Movie Studio, YouTube™, syncing with Google Calendar™ and a redesigned Google+ app.
The Galaxy Nexus also features an ultra-fast 1.2GHz dual core processor and HSPA+ connectivity, providing superior power and speed.
Simon Stanford, Head of Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “The level of interest and anticipation surrounding the release of the Galaxy Nexus has been fantastic. The collaboration with Google to launch the world’s first smartphone featuring Android Ice Cream Sandwich and a 4.65” HD Super AMOLED display is evidence of Samsung’s continuing passion for the smartphone market and commitment to delivering innovative devices. We’re delighted to introduce the Galaxy Nexus to the UK and are looking forward to seeing it in the shops on 17th of November.”
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be available on the 17th of November 2011 in a range of UK retailers.
Good call on including the ‘(UK)’ in the title. Author on slashgear got reamed for leaving it out. :P
I’m sure it was on “accident”
clicks == $$$$
:)
Slashgear is a UK blog if I recall so it’s completely fine for them to leave out “UK” in their title.
they are? did not know that. thx
here’s proof http://www.slashgear.com/search-results/?cx=009851139337901005932%3Augarzucxmc8&cof=FORID%3A11&ie=UTF-8&sa=&q=colour
Um US Retailers, when?
Waiting for the us release date is so painful…
Google is a US based company, yet they give a release date for another country 1st.. Not saying the UK isn’t worthy (cause it is). Just saying you would think Google would give a us release date at the same time or before this announcement.
Stupid US cell services and special availability and over pricing tactics.
I wouldn’t put all the blame on Google, i put most of the blame on Verizon and Samsung. The blame i put on Google is the fact that its not being released on every major carrier simultaneously. This is by one of worst release phone ever, THE DROID BIONIC is the worst release phone by far though.
Its because companies in the United Kingdom like CarphoneWarehouse and Phones4U sell phones unlocked and can be used with any networks unlike the U.S where the cell services are divided in hardware. Which makes it impossible and pointless for you guys.
Must resist urge to import… I almost hope this version -doesn’t- work on T-Mo 3g bands so I can’t.
i hope it does so i can :D
C’mon Verizon, time to set a concrete date too, hopefully the 17th as well.
I put my money on a simultaneous release – being available in the US at the same time as the UK. They are not releasing the info yet because Verizon probably asked them not to – still trying to sell other models first.
I think you may be right.
Why not a world wide release at the same time?
That is looking like it may be the case. Let’s hope anyway.
How many times are they gonna rub it in our faces?… Yeah yeah UK gets it on the 17th we know already jeez… I want ICS but the lack of an SD card is making me look at the Rezound. Yeah it’s thick and the battery is weak but my Evo wasn’t the skinniest kid on the block either and I can always get extra batteries :-/
Im pretty sure this has been said before, but for the ‘general public’ who never look at these forums will bite at the razr and rezound because vzw is marketing them now…they do not want those people to wait for the newest software like ‘we’ are.
It’s going to be the same as the sgs2, it will release in the states 5 months after the rest of the world has it.
Google’s reference phone, 5 months later in the US?
I certainly don’t hope so ;)
If you like the Ice Cream Sandwich wallpapers I found a site that has them. It’s formatted for mobile so they are easy to install. It’s a pretty cool site, it has a ton of other free wallpapers as well. http://www.freedroidwallpaper.com
$#%^ *&%%$ &$%$# $%^&#*(#$#(*#$!
That is all.
Handtec just posted on their blog that the Galaxy Nexus has possibly been pushed back a week across all of the UK.
for what reason
for the us release to be first=)
Verizon is keeping quiet on an official date so they can sell Razr’s and Rezoound’s thats all. I guarantee the Galaxy Nexas will be released this month.
Let the Guinea pigs over there have it first so they can work out the bugs.
Amazon.co.uk has pushed the release to December 2nd, is this the same everywhere now?
On the brighter side their price has dropped to £519.99.
Ironically I signed up for notification on this phone with I think 3 UK carriers: CPW, 02 and Three and none of them have mailed me with news yet!
I’m hoping to get confirmation of the unlocked price, last seen at £515-£520 for the 16GB which places it’s price above the equivalent iPhone 4S…
