Saygus Vphone Gets Verizon ODI Certification

Welp, the Saygus Vphone – a product that has been in the works for a long, long time but couldn’t seem to find a real home in the Android world – is finally about to go  up for sale. In late 2009 the phone was rumored to be headed to Verizon, but for some reason or another wasn’t picked up by them. It faded into the cool night with nary a peep about its disappearance.

Its specs were quite marvelous at the time, boasting an 800MHz processor, a front-facing camera, a 3.5 inch WVGA display, a hardware slide-out keyboard, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of internal storage. On top of that, this is a pure Android device. From the looks of things, nothing has changed under the hood.

Now, it’s back from whatever abyss it seems to have fallen into. Today, it has been reported that the device has actually received ODI certification from Verizon. ODI stands for open device initiative, meaning it will be cleared to run on Verizon’s network but they won’t be selling or supporting it themselves. You’ll have to get this one straight from Saygus if you’re in for one.

It looks like you’ll have to wait a while to purchase it, but it’s said to be available sometime soon. And no, the specs no longer excite us, but it still looks like a pretty OK phone that tinkerers will surely have a blast with. Check it out sitting pretty on Verizon’s site. [PC World via AC]
