Bogus App Pranks Would-Be Pirates, Notifies Friends and Family of Errant Ways

157

It isn’t quite April just yet, but someone out there with a sense of humor and a knack for vigilante justice has pulled off quite the epic prank. A bogus version of Walk and Text, a paid app in the Android Market, has been uploaded to various pirated android app hosting sites around the web, hacking the handset of whoever installs it and launching a digital smear campaign.

If you were to download this version of Walk and Text thinking you just scored the app for free, you would be pretty annoyed to find what you actually get is a program that sends an embarrassing text to all the contacts in your phonebook reading,

“Hey,just downlaoded a pirated App off the Internet, Walk and Text for Android. Im stupid and cheap,it costed only 1 buck.Don’t steal like I did!”

Lulz ensue for all except the person who installed the app. They are greeted with the following message:

Application Not Licensed

We really hope you learned something from this. Check your phone bill;) Oh and dont forget to buy the App from the Market.

Though the intention of the app is to act mostly as a prank, it does collect and send out personal info including your name, phone number, IMEI, and more. In other words, you don’t want to run into this one. Hopefully those who have been taken by the prank have indeed learned their lesson. Support your Android developers, people! It’s the only way to keep quality content flowing into the market.

  5. Very original and also illegal. I do not support the people that do not pay for apps, but you support someone hijacking people’s phones and sending embarrassing msgs? What if one of you contacts was your boss or your CEO? Because you downloaded a stupid app now you also get fired. Great article and thanks for supporting this messed up prank.

    1. So you’re saying its ok to steal as long as it’s something small?

The above comment simply says that he or she does not support malicious pranks being set loose on the phones of unsuspecting users. That doesn’t mean that he or she supports piracy. In fact, he or she actually says, right in the second sentence “I do not support the people that do not pay for apps..”

        1. thank you for actually understanding what i was trying to point out.

@Jboogie321: Please consider the ethical aspect of the situation. Hurting someone because they did something wrong is not something that any website, article or human should endorse, at least in my opinion. I would welcome any opposite opinion with enough justification as to why this is an ethical and moral thing to do; then we can a discussion about the topic any time you like.
In my environment i always have to enforce and implement security, but i also need to think of the implications, ethical and moral dilemmas and the cost to the business. Some situations are black and white, but most of them are a very nice shade of gray. Cheers.

          1. All I’m trying to say is if you do something illegal, which downloading pirated apps is, you have to be prepared for the consequences. Sure you shouldn’t get fired for downloading an app but it tells the boss something about that employee’s character. If he steals an app who says he doesn’t steal office supplies

          2. You are absolutely correct. Also was there a time in your life that you did not obey the speed limits? Not even by a 1m/h? In that case you broke the law knowingly and therefore you should get penalized… if you get caught doing so then with this logic everyone in your contact list should also know about it. Does that also mean you are performing any other illegal activities?
I think ‘Cool’ below summarized it really well. The minute you do something illegal to stop an illegal activity it becomes a moral and ethical issue. If you are saying i’m glad this guy hacked the app and did this to pirates, then you are endorsing the illegal activity.
The issue is not if pirates deserve the worse, they really do for many reasons. But only if action is taken with respect to our laws and our judicial system. Not under a vigilante that decided to take action.

        5. It’s nice that you don’t support piracy but what are you going to do about it? Sometimes you have to do things that are very unpleasant because that’s the only way they will ever learn.

      17. The prank app is much closer to theft than the piracy it attempts to discourage. If this app ran on my phone, it would cost me at least $25.

I’ve probably pirated a few apps in the past because that was the only way to get it. So few developers make their apps available outside the market, even when they’re free! I had to download a pirate copy of ROM Manager Pro because their free download link was 404 and my phone was half-bricked. The ROM I had installed didn’t have Android market and the ROM Manager that came pre-installed was apparently un-upgradeable via the normal means.
Amazon’s market may eventually fix this problem if enough developers put their apps there too. Of course, how many free apps are going to make it to the Amazon market if it costs the developer $100 a year?

      21. Two wrongs don’t make it right… to download is wrong, but to maliciously create an app that causes injury is something entirely different! Whomever wrote this is going to be in deep trouble should they be injured (fired, embarrassed or otherwise).

        1. You can’t apply an ethical situation to unethical people. I’m not saying its right but if the only way to make people think twice about pirating apps is to do this maybe its for the best. At the end of the day we want to support developers

He explicitly states that this app gives out personal, identifying information about your phone, and states that, “You don’t want to run into this one.”

So, the writer isn’t giving this app his support, he is merely informing the android community of a potential threat.

      1. To answer your question i read the article on phandroid and on androidpolice where it originally came from. On androidpolice the author said:
“Today’s story, therefore, gives me added pleasure, because in it, pirates are implicated in one of the most embarrassing ways I can imagine.”
I was mainly referring to that and should not have generalized my comment.
And i was not aware we are keeping scores on our opinions. My opinion is my reality and probably not yours and that comes from experiences etc. Open discussion is where your words need to be and not keeping score. Have a good one.

No Matter how people wanna justify stealing apps, music, software or whatever thats meant to be paid for off the Internet, its illegal, just because it cant be properly policed yet doesnt mean its not a crime, and your not a criminal.

    1. If I’m a pirate and your fake app melts my phone, that’s fine. I deserve it.

But if I’m not a pirate and your fake app sends me a fake text from my pirate acquaintance’s phone, I’m going to punch you in the face. You’ve wasted my time for nothing.

A more ethical way of embarrassing pirates would be to add their contact info to a separate website, or post something embarrassing to their facebook account (and then change the password). Bringing other people into it is not cool.

  42. I would assume that “check your phone bill” refers to the cost that you are going to be charged, if the texts that go out push you over the limit on your plan for allotted text messages per month. I have over a thousand contacts in my phone, and only have a 500 text plan.

  50. Which ever junkies downloaded the pirated app, had this coming to them. Who knows how much they’ve stolen in apps from other developers.

If you are worried about your CEO, boss, finding out that you are pirating apps, then, simply don’t engage in that activity. You’re putting yourself in the position of ending up with malware on your device, no one is forcing you to download pirated apps in the first place.

  60. I’m glad to see things like this happening. I can’t wait to read the article about some guy who has a i[hone with a tether to his belt clip and some guy runs by, snags the iphone out of his hand runs down the street and 5 seconds later his arm blows off.

I’ll probably be the only one like hell yeah! while everyone else cries for the theif.

Typical hypocrocies is US culture.. Cry about the criminals rights when the victims prevail.

  65. First off… to PIRATE an Android app is like stealing an apple from the tree in your own yard. The apps are priced extremely competitively and most offer AD supported versions which generate income for the programmer. I support developers who write effective and useful applications that I use as I believe most do.

So where does that leave us with this story… It tells us that it is smoke and mirrors and the person who wrote this app did so with malicious intent under the guise and veil of people pirating apps. There is NO quarter given to a programmer who writes and distributes malicious coding, PERIOD!

Those who download apps, some knowingly pirated, maybe sometimes not fully knowing, might be caused irreparable harm by an app such as this. Unfortunately for those here who posted that they deserve it, I wonder how they’d feel if they had their utilities disconnected and a big sign placed on their front lawn the next time they paid their bill late, scofflaws that they might be. Or maybe even a phone call to their boss when they forgot to pay their rent on time? So you see… there is a world of difference here.

There are and shouldn’t be any one person or thing that becomes the Judge, Jury & Executioner… Sorry but even if downloaded, people have a RIGHT to defend themselves against overzealous prosecution at the hands of prejudicial minded malcontents! Let alone a programmer with a point to prove, however misguided his/her intentions, their action here is extremely illegal and offensive!

    Have a nice day!
    :)

  70. That is 5 kinds of Awesome

  71. Those of you who argue against pirating apps are all hypocrites. If you’re using an Android phone you are more likely to be tech savvy, and if you are tech savvy you are more likely to use bit torrent. These are facts.

There is only one word which needs to be considered in assessing the actions of the pirated app maker here and that is JUSTICE. Are the results of using this app JUST? The answer is a resounding no. Just would have been to send out whatever number of sms are equal to the cost of purchasing the app. This app basically whoops your ass when all you deserve is a slap to the mouth.
