It’s pretty hard to deny that the Motorola Atrix 4G is a powerful piece of hardware. When it launches, it should immediately become one of the top Android Phones available, especially surprising considering its resting place on AT&T’s lineup. Unfortunately, not ALL of the Atrix 4G’s power will be realized when it first launches.
Most notably, the Tegra-2 processor won’t be encoding any 1080p content when recording a video. That’s a bummer considering the LG Optimus 2X can do just that. Thankfully MOTO’s own spec sheet is saying the Atrix 4G will get these capabilities in a software update after launch.
It seems all the hard knocks on the Motorola Atrix 4G are quickly getting their load lightened… first the overheating bug and delay are debunked, now this. No word on whether green smiley will come prepackaged in the 1080p software update.
if you don’t live in the US i wouldn’t count on it!
First!!!
Awww, FAIL. :'(
I still wouldn’t touch this device with a ten foot pole… ESPECIALLY ON AT&T… The prove is in the pudding and this device has to prove it’s self on at&t as well as on there SO CALLED 4G NETWORK WHICH IS A JOKE… Everyone knows at&t LOCKS DOWN THERE CUSTOMERS DEVICES SO THE DEVICE WILL NOT OPERATE AS INTENDED.. They have no real true allegeance to ANDROID… They have to PROVE THEMSELF TO ME… OTHERWISE THE BEST SMARTPHONE DEVICE ON THE MARKET IS AND HAS BEEN FOR 8MONTHS NOW THE HTC EVO 4G ON SPRINT…. NOTHING BEATS THIS DEVICE ESPICALLY NOT AT&T… SPRINT BITCH SLAPS AT&T ALL DAY LONG
You would think that by the time this phone comes out it should be getting 2.3, seeing as 2.3 would be 2 months old at that time.
My last problems with this phone is the lack of Gyro (I may get the LG X2 because of this), and NFC (probably have to wait for a phone next to this one anyway)
Do Blackberry and Android users on AT&T complain about the network? I haven’t heard much buzz form those users…only the iPhone users.
It’s already starting to look like a typical non-Droid Motorola device. Launching on 2.2, which will be nearing its first birthday. Vague promises of future updates “later this year.” Bogged down the universally-hated Motoblur, which will only slow down that process.
.
Remember, Motorola was promoting Flash on devices that never even made it to Android 2.2 (and, as a result, never could run it). If a feature isn’t there at launch, you’re taking a chance. Promises mean nothing.
hope the same is true for the bionic
Sprint is good if you live in a big city, if not, you’re SOL. I live near a big city amongst large towns, and Sprint is terrible. AT&T is way better, however, Verizon is the best with 3G in the area. I’m sure they’re are already better phones than the Atrix being tested. And they’ll be on Verizon! WOOT!
@Dave People never learn, that type of stuff has been happening since mid 2009 when Samsung and HTC took over a year to update their first phones. Almost 2 years later and millions are still falling for the manufacturers lies, I think that is what made Google decide to make the Nexus line of phones and sell them to the public. The first two developer phones were not publicly available unless you bought one off of Ebay or you registered as a dev.
The only thing sprint has going for it is the Evo besides that they are a highway phone, get of the beaten path and they don’t work been there done that, I wouldn’t have sprint if someone was paying my bill, In other words sprint really really sucks bad! Oh and you should probably take a look at their so called wifi 4g service specs (upload and download speeds) cause that is a serious joke. Sprint SUCKS!
I wonder what’s going to happen when you have two golden childs like verizon and apple and let’s say verizon starts having issues with the I phone on their network who’s gonna take the fall out of these two perfect angels. Hmmmm!
Will you guys stop complaining about the different networks? Every network seems to perform differently depending on where you are. That’s what your network choice should be based on.
I live in GA and t mobile is okay here. Yet when I went on vacation to Vegas I had a great connection constantly (always at least 3 bars).
you guys should be happy a high end device for android is on every network now that means more games and apps for the market everyday i admit i was a ifanboy now im upgrading to the atrix so what its bootloader is locked with launcher pro and adw who really cares. If its recording in 1080P and has a gig of ram it’s going to be the shit bootloader locked or not name another device that can do this just like veryone lived with droid and droid x and liked it eventually going to like this. O yea about att network i happen to be one of the ones who have unlimited data so i aint complaining and the service is great ftw.
@jdog25 A software upgrade to 2.3 might happen eventually. But since its not coming prepackaged with 2.3 it does not have to build NFC support whch is a hardware upgrade.
Damn them…
@Sputnick, I have android on ATT and my finance has had all I phones. She has problems all the time, slower data and dropped calls. I very seldom have trouble with my backflip. Know others with Iphones and they have problems. Don’t know about Blackberries. Remember ATT has almost no control on Iphones but get blamed for every problem.
Also, it might be tough to upgrade this phone to 2.3 since Motorola would have to mod 2.3 such that it can utilize both cores (similar to the changes they had to make to 2.2 to get 2.2 to work on this device), and that could potentially take longer. Also the encrypted bootloader means that users of this phone won’t get any 2.3 ROMs prior to any leaks by Motorola or the official upgrade.
So is att cool now? Lol.
always was cool kid every since the first iphone ;)
How about.. instead of complaining about 2.3 upgrades on a phone that isn’t even sold yet.. you people just buy a phone with 2.3 on it ? .. Who can tell me the big features that 2.3 has on it that 2.2 is missing ?
I wonder if it can beat iPhone 4 720p quality.
When a company, especially if it’s related to AT&T (and Moto has an OK record so far, but definitely very very far from great) says “it will have X post-launch through a software upgrade,” that’s basically the kiss of death. If they could do it, they would just do it now.
I bought the eclair captivate on AT&T, happy to know that Froyo would be on the way ASAP! And I think we all know how that went… anyway, Atrix should be a good phone, but only buy it if you want it the way it comes out of the box. Don’t count on anything else. The Atrix can shoot 720p video, and I hope that’s how the reviewers see it. If they actually offer an upgrade, then they can redo the review when and if it happens.
@Richard, You’re an idiot, The Evo is a fine smartphone, but it’s last years tech. The Atrix is going to blow it away, you just have to accept the fact that some people are going to have a better phone than you.
@justsomeguy Yeah I’m a Nexus S man myself but when it comes to Evo vs Atrix, the Atrix will win. Now I am sure that an Evo 2 with similar specs as the Atrix is just around the corner.
@ #15bobthebuilder-The Atrix is without a doubt a great device, but adw and launcher pro running better than the stock launcher aren’t the reasons many people (myself included) are less than happy with the locked bootloader. When the bootloader is locked the way Moto has been doing to the DX/D2,etc. you can root, overclock and run ROMs built ONLY on the current release. Yes, there are ROMs out for the DX/D2, but there will never be any gingerbread ROMs until Motorola releases the official kernel for Android 2.3…whenever that may be. So, unlike Droid OG owners, you will NEVER be able to upgrade it until Moto says so. Sure, it has awesome features, I think they’re great, but (especially since it looks like it’s being released with Froyo) it will likely be at least awhile before it sees a 2.3 upgrade, and Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to be shown at the Google I/O which isn’t all that far away. I have no idea what is going to be in ICS, I imagine a “phone version” of Honeycomb, but what if it comes out, kicks ass, and you’re still stuck on Froyo because Moto locked their bootloaders? It won’t seem all that great then. XDA is great at making upgraded ROMs (for phones that can load them). Which is why the OG Droid, on a good ROM can go toe-to-toe with anything out there at the moment (except for the lack of memory, Moto dropped the ball on that). My old OG ran a custom Froyo ROM months before the official release on a jdlfg 1366MHz kernel, all day long and stable AND it would use less battery – all because of the unlocked bootloader, almost vanilla android, and the support and ease to work with it enjoys. IMO, when ity’s time comes, Moto should release the Bionic all spec’d out, but, like the OG Droid that brought them back, and put Android in general solidly on the map – almost or all vanilla and an unlocked bootloader. The devs would clamor for it, meaning tons of good ROMs, and most importantly-updates.
The evo lol is a joke that is a peice of junk and att is not that bad my service is verizon but I am thinking of going to verizon just for the atrix man verizon is slacking the bionic should come out sooner not in may its bs
Now atrix is going to be motos flagship on att you really think their not going to upgrade it to 2.3 come on my dude that makes no sense maybe the backflip or something like that but like they said this phone is being built to replace desktops and laptops moto is not that stupid who ever is not getting it because they think moto is not going to upgrade to ice cream or 2.3 is stupid
You completely missed the point of my post. I never once said it was never going to be upgraded, that would be silly. I was simply trying to explain why some people don’t like encrypted bootloaders and how that affects the future. Again: some people (myself included) like to know that their phone will have the option to upgrade to newer OSs as they come along and have the ability to choose between a bunch of different ROMs offering improved performance, battery life, tweaks, etc. I also wasn’t insulting people who are content with the status quo. I was only attempting to explain why some people take issue with the encrypted bootloaders.
@ DJ. Wow bro. Blab enough??
Its not at&t’s fault that the captivate doesn’t have froyo. That is samsungs fault. I’m getting this phone no matter how many of you guys complain about at&t. I can’t wait to use the laptop dock since I don’t currently have a pc. This is going to be freaking awesome.
@Richard Evo is so old technology. It has first generation Snapdragon that has a .99 cent GPU that can barely run any 3D game. That 8MP camera is one of the worst 8MP I have ever seen. Others 5MP are better than that at both photos and videos.

Ask iphone users how it feels to be locked down they can tell you about that.. SPRINT ROCKS ALL CARRIERS DWEEB HEADS
AT&T needs this phone to be more than anything offered by other carriers. Why ? simply now with iphone on verizon . AT&T needs to hold its customers and get new ones . The only way is to have a powerhouse of an android phone. This could be a blessing for android as an operating OS .AT&T will now push cell phone manufactures twice as much so they can compete with BIG RED . We all win .
