The lack of multitouch support on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been a chief complaint with the device since its launch. SE had originally suggested that the functionality could possibly arrive in a future update, but later backtracked to state the X10 flat out didn’t have the hardware and software to support it. While for the most part this is true, through firmware tweaks and a bit of emulation Android hackers made some serious progress on getting multitouch gestures recognized in the X10. Not to be outdone at their own game, SE today announced that limited multitouch support is being worked on for a future software update.
Right now the update is pegged for early 2011, but judging by the pace of previous update releases, we get the feeling it might be a bit longer. By that time the X12 and even the Playstation Phone might very well be already released, but hey, at least SE isn’t totally abandoning the X10 now that it got its long-awaited Android 2.1 upgrade.
