Droid 2 Packaging Gets Prepped, Late August Launch Likely

There really isn’t a doubt in our minds that the Motorola Droid 2 will be launching at the end of August, especially if many of the recent leaks are any indication. Some [really blurry] photos snuck out of a packaging production plan jive with this time frame, showing a handset that is far enough into manufacturing that it will soon be getting boxed and prepped for shipment to Verizon stores around the US. Word on the block is that the exact date of release will be August 23rd. With all the hooplah about the Droid X still swirling around and showing no sign of settling, it looks like we are locked in for total Droid-age from her until the end of the summer.

  1. That date sounds about right – just outside the 30-day return window for DX early adopters. (Not that I would give my DX up for the D2!)

  2. Hoping that they make some sort of deal for current D1 owners who still have another year to go before upgrades.

  3. Just hope they will release it in Germany as soon as possible. Hopefully also on August 23rd.

  4. People really need to read up on Verizon policies. D1 owners don’t have a year left before they can upgrade. The Annual Upgrade policy states that you can upgrade w/ 2 year pricing after 12 months, but you lose your NE2.

  5. If the bootloader is locked, I will keep my Droid. I hope verizon gets some new phones with unlocked bootloaders and vanilla android by the time I am ready for my upgrade.

  6. I wouldn’t expect or count on Verizon releasing anymore phones with hackable bootloaders.. now if they were info free tethering that would be a different story but they like to be in business and turn a profit.

  7. @Paul losing the profit on tethering might be worth keeping customers. Some money is more than no money.

  8. Judging by Droid X sales, I think some people are way overestimating the effect that the “No unlocked, no sale” crowd has on the market. Their importance is self-imagined, and nobody else seems to be shaking in their boots worrying about them. Droid 2 will be locked, it will sell just fine, and Motorola and Verizon (and likely most of their customers) will be happy.

  9. @Ross, get this through your think skull, we don’t care what Joe Dumbass and Ms. Dipstick think. We want to hack our phones. This is why I hate it that Linux cannot go GPLv3, if your just going to take and never give write your own OS you bastards.

  10. @Steve, build your own phone and then you can stop whining. Or maybe somebody will release a non-subsidized phone that you can hack to your heart’s content. I’m sure everyone will be willing to drop $500-$600 on a hackable phone. Oh, subsidy. People forgot about that. All the, “I own my phone” talk. Not entirely. The carrier is subsidizing your phone, allowing you to pay off the full price on installments as part of the price of service. All the “I want” without regard for anyone else…someone needs a nap. Want a juice box?

  11. im on my 5th motorola droid within 7 month, no way am i going to ever buy anymore motorol phones ever again. cant wait wait till my contract ends

  12. Droid2 better have something dffrent that sticks out otherwise the X looks as though it will kill it in sells. Keyboard is cool but as cool is the on-screen X keyboard is…don’t think the D2 will out sell the X

  13. WELL ASURIAN (VERIZON’S PHONE INSURANCE) TOLD ME THAT THE DROID IS RETIRED AND THEY WON’T BE GETTING ANY MORE IN TO REPLACE MINE (MY SCREEN CRACKED). THEY WANTED ME TO GET A DEVOUR (NO WAY) OR HTC DROID (NOT HAPPENING EITHER) SO I COMPLAINED AND I WILL BE GETTING THE INCREDIBLE WHEN IT COMES IN….SHE SAID IN ABOUT A WEEK. HOW CAN THE DROID 1 BE RETIRED IN JUST 9 MONTHS????? SERIOUSLY???? AND THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE ANY REFIRBISHED ONES TO REPLACE IT???? WOW…..I GOT THE X….I HOPE THAT DON’T HAPPEN WITH THE DX TOO!!

  14. @Ross my next phone will likely be like you say, T-mobiles coverage has just about gotten there. Capitalism is built on I want, get over it.
