Sprint dangling $400 in faces of families looking to leave other carriers

29

Sprint is tossing up $400 for anyone who wants to leave their carrier and get hip to the Now Network. They’re running a new promo between August 19th and September 15th that will entice families to leave carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T to join their service. In exchange, you get $400 to use for your new smartphones.

There are a lot of catches, natch, if you are willing to jump ship. For starters, you must be getting service with at least 3 lines, and all 3 of those lines have to be phones. Next, you’ll need to be porting at least one of the lines from a carrier not affiliated with Sprint (which means Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile customers need not apply).

Third, the phone you’re getting will not be eligible for any mail-in rebate offers Sprint may be running. Fourth, it only applies to select phones. Fifth, you must keep your service open for two months. Finally, you must use all of the credit at the time you take advantage of this offer.

That’s a ton of things to adhere to, but when you’re basically being given $400 to jump ship I imagine Sprint wants to make sure they make things hard. It is a great deal for any family who was already thinking about making the switch, but I couldn’t possibly recommend this to anyone still under contract because those ETF fees will likely exceed the amount of money Sprint’s offering (unless all your lines are dumb phones). Take a look at the flyer above. [via PhoneArena]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. what are the terms and conditions to receive that $400? is it just leave your carrier and switch to sprint? that’s all? nothing else? is it $400 rebate? cash in your bank? or credit towards your account?

    1. read the article idiot

      1. a simple “have you read the article?” question would suffice.

  2. Last Sunday afternoon, my wife and I went to a Sprint store located at 3675 Satellite Blvd Ste 125
Duluth, GA 30096, you can call it “The Atlanta 4G LTE area”.
She wanted the mighty Galaxy S3. We were considering Sprint as our first choice for its “UNLIMITED” data plan/Price. Once there, we tested the phone’s speed…
Ladies and gentlemen, what a disappointment: 0.3 to 0.5Mbps at the best (to be fair, I did all the possible updates to the phone). I could not believe it.
We were in the Sprint Store (not a booth at the mall) and their signal/connection was horrible. It was really sad.
When the first EVO 4G came up (June 2010), we signed for 2 of them, but after 7 or 8 months with “4G”, we noticed 4G WiMax was a bad idea—we canceled contracts and jumped to Boost prepaid $50 unlimited everything (now I paid $40 going to $35 in 2 more shrinkage payments). I can’t complain at all. Service is decent and speed is the same as Sprint lol…
(I got from 0.15 to 1.5 Mbps depending on the Atlanta Area I am testing… 0.7Mbps average at home and 0.30Mbps at work).
Since I got Wi-Fi in both places, I don’t feel the need to change my provider. Even on some road trips we took, GPS and everything else worked just fine.
However, despite my happiness, the wife was complaining about her poor and slow Boost phone/signal/service, especially when shopping at the mall (she’s a weekend shopping enthusiast). That’s why we decided to give it another try with Sprint, but after that experience… No way. :(
And it got worse: in the same shopping plaza, there is a Verizon store as well and just for the heck of it we went in and tested their Galaxy S3… What a difference: 6Mbps download effortless, just like that (I know it’s not the fastest big red has, but it was amazing). I have to admit I am not a VZW fan because of its expensive plans, but at least you get the quality service you pay for.
We left that store with a bittersweet feeling, but after some sense talking with my wife, she agreed that is not worth it to spend that much money every month and gave in to keeping her Boost service.

    Bottom line for us:
    1) Unless you make good money out of your phone or have a sweet deal with your minutes/data plan or got plenty money to spend and you don’t care, there is no reason to pay that much for phone services these days.
    2) You can have the ultimate and most wonderful smart phone, but your carrier’s features play the most important part in that game so make sure what they advertise is actually true or at least good enough to meet your needs so you won’t mind to pay them.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.
I just wanted to express my opinion after that experience on Sunday… :)
    God bless you all.

    1. I can see your POV. I always ask about being able to return said device and cancel all the shenanigans with a carrier when moving to a new area. For example Im soon gonna be moving to GA. I will be in the Marietta area (North of ATL). From what i saw with my sister in laws Galaxy S 2 (Sprint) her coverage is ASS. My sensation and the wifes S2 (Tmo) did reasonably well but i still wanna see if it can get better. Gonna check out Verizons offering and see how it is. TL;DR – Check the coverage where you will need it the most before you commit to one of these horrid contracts. No point in getting stuck with a phone you can barely friggin use. once those 14 days are up, thats it. $200+ cancel fee per line is not a cheap pill to swallow for anyone in todays economy. And if you can then hell throw me some cash. :(

    2. I agree except for…

“there is no reason to pay that much for phone services these days”
As you said yourself, you may want to pay that much because you get better and faster service. I am with Verizon for that reason alone. Clearly there is not “no reason” to switch to Verizon.

      Great comment btw.

    3. She did a nice job (better, sadly, than some Phandroid articles.)

    4. I’ve been with sprint since I bought my launch day EVO 4G in 2010. I’ve gotten consistent 5mbps down speeds on WiMAX and about 5-800kbps on 3g, which is what I mostly use. I’ve found their service to be just fine, and I don’t do much data usage because I download podcasts while at home on my Wifi. Sorry you had a lousy experience, but I’ve been really satisfied with Sprint and I am loathe to move away from unlimited data. Can’t wait to get the next generation Nexus phone after it’s announced and made available on Sprint.

    5. Wow.. all that typing just for that? You could have just said “Sprint signal is really bad in my area”

    6. no time to read this

    7. Speed was the same as Sprint on Boost because you are still on Sprint. Boost is a Sprint company. I would like to switch to Sprint or even Boost where I live but the Sprint network around Baton Rouge is terrible. I to am on Verizon and while their service is great here and I actually do not mind paying for the service, being forced off my unlimited data plan if I ever want to upgrade my phone is the last straw that will probably make me leave them. My monthly rate will increase over $100 a month to keep comperable data used a month. I am actually pretty close to just going back to a regular “dumb” cell phone. I just use mobile data as a luxuary. I do not need it to survive.

  3. Loser with loser comments need to be blocked….for good

    1. Unfortunately for us, they can always come back with a different account…unfortunately for them, they have to live with being ignorant, stupid, and filled with hate. (And probably self-loathing).

      1. Glad you aren’t the worldwide Internet censor. Why not let EVERYONE have an opinion, not just your one.

        1. Im guessing you don’t realize what comment I was referring to…it’s since been removed.

  4. @ second post…really? Wow.

This smacks of desperation Sprint. Shame but they backed the wrong horse for years.

  5. Too many terms, like phones not eligible for rebates, etc.

  6. What phones aren’t eligible? I mean we actually fit those needs. LoL!! Those look like normal needs. I mean getting 3 phones, you’re guaranteed to use all the $400. Too bad we’re already on Sprint, suffering with mediocre 3G and WiMax. *sigh*

I’ll wait it out a little longer to see if things get better. I wanna try that MoPho Q to see how the 4G LTE is in Houston…well… around Houston and not in one spot right next to a tower. -_-

  7. Um. Whoa, Second Commenter. Whoa.

  8. I’m sure sprint users could just port out to att for a day.. and the. Start a new acct with sprint. Voila $400 no ETF bc you are in the att/Verizon 30 day window

    1. Ummm no. I am a Sprint Store Rep. That is called false churn. If you tried to port back, we would just reactivate your same lines : )

  9. Are you kidding? Sprint can’t even get new customers without PAYING them $400?
They should have spent all that money, the last 1-2 *YEARS* installing 4G LTE instead.
They have near 0 cell towers as comparied to Verizons 300+ markets.

    1. stop being silly back up your comments with recent quarterly reports. you lost

  10. JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP… YOU WILL STILL RECIEVE YOUR MAIL IN REBATE ON YOUR DEVICE ALONG WITH THIS PORT IN OFFER

  11. Too bad they can’t dangle a decent coverage area or the least amount of customer service in front of me.

  12. Sprint could blow me and I still wouldn’t switch to them.
