The Motorola XOOM has been out for over a month on Verizon, but many of you vowed not to buy a tablet on contract and vowed not to pay $800 for it off-contract. The 3G-less version of the device is now out, though, and can be had from several major retailers for $600. So did you end up grabbing one or have different offerings from Motorola’s competitors compelled you to wait?
If you did buy it, what accessories did you pick up with it? What are some of the first Honeycomb apps you’ll be checking out? One great thing about the Wi-Fi’s delayed launch is that a community has already come together for this exciting piece of hardware. There are hundreds of threads and thousands of posts dedicated to the tablet. Here are just a few of them that you’ll want to take a look at:
- Let folks know you’ve picked up your XOOM here.
- Proceed to the accessories section for some suggestions on a good case or two to pick up for your new tablet.
- If there’s something you need help with, chances are you’ll find an answer in the support sub-section for the Motorola XOOM section.
As always, be sure to let us know how you’re liking the XOOM. We’re always eager to hear users’ opinions on new devices. Happy XOOMing/Tableting/Honeycombing/Whatevering! [Note: Picture is of Verizon’s Motorola XOOM.]

i returned my 3g version last night. will be getting my wifi version soon as my credit hits! :)
This was really a stupid move from Motorola they should have released both 3G and WiFi only at the same time. People are more likely to go for crApple now that iPad too has been released.
Moto should have tried the black and white shit or may be black and red like Mr. Jobs does all the time but due to some reason he too this time decided to release both black and white iPad at the same time.
The propaganda stopped Motorola regardless of when they released the Wifi version. People refuse to do their own thinking and so the Xoom is not as popular as it could be if they just went down to their local best buy and played with it for a while.
i did not get one. i thought i wanted a XOOM, and it sounds great on paper but from what I can tell its a half-baked product that was shipped too soon. that said, i want a highquality android tablet and if i had $600 to burn, i’d probably get one, play with it for awhile and unload it on ebay ASAP. unfortunately, there still isn’t a gotta-have-it android tablet unless you count the Nook Color which does most of what the WiFi Xoom can do for a fraction of the price. i won’t buy a fruitpad, but you guys are really dragging your feet and its getting old. too little, too late, and too goddamn expensive for what little they do. HTC, Samsung, LG, MOTO….get with the f’in program already!!! sheesh.
Samsung’s $499 model should be the one to buy. Less the “up date this and UX that” situation. I’m gonna enjoy my fruitpad until somethin comes out that is as smooth as iOS.
I played with one at Fry’s yesterday and the Xoom is really, really slick. Definitely the highest build quality I’ve seen yet, really nice looking, solid feeling and the Honeycomb OS is awesome. I’m seriously considering it, its only the price that is deterring me right now.
i’m sure it is the best android tablet available, but thats little
consolation to those of us that know its a beta product and was rushed
out too soon. it makes us look like fools for championing a clearly
unfinished product. but like pimpstrong said, the samsung 8.9 expected
at $499 seems to be a better option…on paper anyway. even then, like
it or not, the sub 10″ tablets need to compete with the ipad on price,
and so far it’s not happening. sad trombone.
What about it feels like it was a rushed beta? I thought the same thing, and then I actually used one. I failed to see a reason to call it a beta. The only thing that felt a little rushed was the fact the SD card slot doesn’t work, but that’s it.
well for starters the sd card wasn’t enabled, because wait for
it……google hadn’t implemented the code into honeycomb yet. the
hardware support was incomplete upon launch because it was released
before honeycomb was finished. although with the massive onboard
memory, i can see how they justified it. i realize that for the
android faithful, its not a big deal. however, to the average joe it
would seem broken, right? thats just bad business, and the damage is
done.
the problem is the product was released before it was finished and it
just makes MOTO look bad. furthermore, before the wifi Xoom came out,
the original version of same was released without the cell-modem
installed, requiring you to send it in or take it to a store to be
serviced. who does that? they clearly rushed the launch, to compete
with the iPad2 and i think it was ill-advised. as a result i gave up
trying to defend the xoom, and decided to wait for the real deal.
Sooo… no sd? That’s it? That makes the whole thing beta?
Of course the Verizon model was launched with a cell modem inside! Don’t be ridiculous. You’re apparently confused about the LTE update.
You can go ahead and wait for the ‘real deal’, but in the meantime I’ll continue to enjoy the heck out of the Xoom, sd or no.
It realeased without Flash support stupid. They said it support Flash but at time of release it did not. This is typical US amareican rushed crap just like the iPad with all it problems. Only Lorean and Taiwan can build quality hardware. US company better focusing on writing songs and software and leave hardware to experts.
Wow, yea, that certainly makes me stupid, and is of course Android’s fault, since they make Flash, right? :)
Relax man, Flash is here now.
Actually the 8.9 is priced at $469. This was posted all over the place. The 10.1 is $499.
yeah well the real cost, with tax it is easily around $500 so there.
pedantic much? get over yourself.
I don’t really understand the two expensive comment. The xoom comes with 32gb of storage and a GPS chip for the same price as a 32gb Ipad. I think if they offered a 16gb model for $499 they would have however quelled all the talk about how expensive it is from people that don’t look at the specs. I believe the xoom is aggresively priced based on the quality/hardware packed into it. Look at the new 10.1/8.9 galaxy tabs, they are right inline w/the price of the xoom and the ipad. And, if you say the galaxy tab is 469-499 based on size, please remember again that is the 16gb model and that the 32gb model is going to be 569-599. Also, comparing a nook color that’s boasting a 800 mhz processor to a xoom is naive at best.
slow your roll, scooter. i’ve been following android since before the
G1 was announced. unlike you, i’m mature enough to understand that not
everyone has the same needs or expectations. for the record, the Xoom
gives me a gadget-boner too, and i wish it was as good as i know it
COULD be. but its just a big disappointment so far. it was released
prematurely and its too expensive for something that i’m only going to
use for browsing and casual games.
unlike some folks, i’m not a drone hyped into believing that i NEED a
souped-up dual-core tablet with all the bells and whistles to have
usable device. spouting GeeBeez and processor speeds doesn’t help your
case. talk about naive! specs are important but its the overall
product execution that matters. personally, $600 for a secondary
device is ludicrous. i’m still waiting for a solid honeycomb tablet at
the right price/performance ratio for my needs. you go ahead and enjoy
your Xoom and i’ll keep my money for a finished product.
Do you have the Xoom? No? Then stop telling people how you know anything more then the next guy about it…
“600$ for a secondary device is ludicrous” well that’s an opinion and people buy 600$ shoes these days …so I don’t get how you can state that comment as a fact…
I’m waiting on my Xoom in Canada (its preordered and should be at my doorstep first week of april…) then I can give a valuable opinion of it…
I haven’t read much people complain about their xoom…that could be blind fanboysime or maybe its actually a good product…
Why are you so angry with my opinion? I clearly framed it as my personal
opinion that the xoom is not for me. I am not preaching, I’m defending my
opinion. And more civilly than you can muster. However your willful
ignorance is cute. Carry on.
I like how you interpret my reply as angry…
Now we know you are a mature and civil person…
We are lucky to have you here. This is my last reply because you have given me a lesson of life…I’m not ready to rule the forums like you…
Thanks…and sorry for my lack of civism…
I’m neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you, as my limited experience with the Xoom comes from briefly handling display models. However, I don’t understand your statement that this is a half-baked product. Please explain.
Nope. Still to pricey with the news of all these new tablets coming out. If the Xoom was $450 I’d buy it but for $600 price tag ill wait to are what the competition can do.
I’m particularly interested in the Asus transformer.
Love the wifi. There are things that can be improved, but as of right now, it is a great system. This is still an early OS and that is why there are some issues. The tegra games are amazing.
Where is the option “I live outside the U.S. and I’m waiting for it to be released in my country” I’m still perplexed how Canada always gets things released a month later if we are lucky!!!
I pre-ordered mine on Futureshop.ca for 599$ CA …says its going to ship 1 or 2 week of april…
I held out for the wifi only, but started to think about the mobility of having 3g/4g and am on my way to Verizon to buy one right now!
Nah. I really hoped MOTO/XOOM would have had their feces together. Glad I didn’t just knee-jerk and get it. Based on the paper specs, man, it sounded like the tablet I was looking for. The main reason I didn’t was the insane pricing model and the gotta-get-a-data-plan-to-use-wifi BS. Those two deal-killer aspects gave me pause… and as it turns out, glad it did.
“The main reason I didn’t was the insane pricing model and the gotta-get-a-data-plan-to-use-wifi..”
That’s bs. You didn’t need to get a data plan to use wi-fi (that rumor was false). Also, now you have a wi-fi model that doesn’t cost as much, so your complaint makes no sense.
I will be using my DHD to tether internet to my WiFi only xoom on the rare occasions I’ll be using it on the go :)
Nope, I bought a 1st Gen 32GB iPad for $399. Steal.
I would have sold you mine for $300
There’s an iPad drought so they are high even on Craigslist. We wanted new tho.
Pre-ordered my UK Wifi model this morning. HURRY UP APRIL 9th! :D
I bought it Yesterday and returning it Today or tomorrow. It’s a nice product but not for me. 1. It’s too large. I think the 7″ or 8.9″ tablet from samsung is the sweet spot for these devices. 2. It’s too heavy. Again the smaller tab have an advantage. 3, You’re going to laugh. But, I don’t like honeycomb. I prefer Froyo :)
Nook Color seems like a nice size and they already have Root and Customs ROMs for it.
Where’s the “I preordered it and it hasn’t arrived yet” option? :P
You must have ordered it from Amazon. I preordered mine on the 16th with next day shipping. After finding out it wasn’t going to arrived till tomorrow. I cancelled and bought it at Best Buy.
I also preordered mine from Amazon and am waiting for it to come in. They did ship it on saturday though and it is scheduled for delivery today.
Nope. Costco. It shipped on Friday, but it won’t get to me til’ wednesday because it shipped out of Oregon and I’m in Arizona. (+1 day because I’m not in Phoenix =/).
I don’t have a car and I don’t really wanna walk for 20 minutes carrying a $600 piece of hardware. :P
I got one yesterday but I’m finding the screen to not quite live up to my expectations; if the Asus Transformer comes out soon I might return the Xoom and get that since it’s supposed to have an IPS display that has better viewing angles and better color/contrast.
I’ve had my xoom for a little over 2 weeks. (the 3g version) I’m completely satisfied with it. I’ve only seen one force close.. which came from a flash game on some web site, I don’t know why people seem to say they’re seeing them often. I completely disagree with most of the reviews I’ve read and would recommend this to anyone looking for an android tablet. It’s an amazing experience.. and I’m not just saying that cause I’m an android fanboy. I’ve show it off dozens of times now. I consistently get 14hrs of battery life easy. I do leave the screen at about 30% percent brightness… but don’t let that fool you.. even that is plenty bright for indoor use. I’m constantly browsing and playing games on it. One thing I’ve notice is that is doesn’t matter if I’m playing a high end game with 3d graphics, watching a movie, web browsing, or just looking through my email.. the battery doesn’t seem to drain faster under heavy use. I typically take it off the charger at the beginning of my day (8am), use it lightly at work for chatting, email, and browsing then after dinner around 6 I’m on it heavily till at least 2 am either reading or playing games or checking out new apps… I’ve not had it pugged in all day and I usually still have over 15% left. When I pushed it it took an hour of angy birds to go from 15% to 7%. Everything for runs smooth as silk. Personally I think that the large majority of apps that weren’t built for the tablet scale just fine. Only a few of them show up as little box (which is the developers fault). Other than SD card not working at launch… take my word for it.. this is finished product. I love now more than when I got it.
Completely agree. Everyone seems to be jumping on some weird bandwagon that thinks that this is a half baked device. A month in, I’m using it more than ever, and I can’t see myself ever going back. Honeycomb is fantastic, and the whole experience is just great.
I am however exchanging my 3g model for a wi-fi one. Never got the Verizon service, and doesn’t look like I’ll need it after all.
Oh, I think the “half baked device bandwagon” is nothing more than Apple FUD from apple fans or even apple themselves–we know they pay a lot of people to make comments, write articles, and spread FUD concerning competitors and make outrageous claims concerning their products on the web. They’ve been doing it for years.
What about gaming on the Xoom, there’s not that many good games for the Xoom and that’s holding me back from getting one. When do you think there will be a flood of good apps and games for the Xoom??? I like the iPad for it’s many Good games and Apps, but I want a Xoom tablet.
One of the biggest issues devs have had with the Android Market is the lack of in-app purchasing. That should go live this week. From what I’ve read there are a lot of developers waiting just for that.
One company that helps devs port to platforms said they have over 300 iOS devs ready to port to Android when in-app purchasing is available. So, I think the next couple of months we will see a lot of decent apps hit Android from iOS.
Thanks for the info Honeycomb_FTW that shedded more light on the Xoom. Again I like the iPad 2 because of the apps and games that’s on it. I was leaning toward getting the ipad 2, but now rethinking.
You get Angry Birds stupid. This game rocks and makes the purchase worth it to buy one. Stupid!
Hey Stupid, that’s only one game compared to the many that’s on the iPad. Do you know of any other good games that take advantage of Xoom tablet???
I am experiencing the exact same thing with my xoom. I am confused by the half baked comments. If people refer to avalible app(which I don’t think they do) the number of “Tablet ready” apps has already doubled since launch and most work just fine. I think people forget that there were not that many apps for the iPad when it launched, and developers quickly tweeked apps so that they would work fine. I expect the same to continue with the xoom.
I ordered one from Best Buy. I called around at noon, but all Saint Louis area Best Buys were out of them. So the gentleman ordered me one over the phone and said it should be in the store for pick up by Thursday.
After reading about that Nexus tablet rumor I now longer want this tablet.
you realize that theres not even a solid rumor about a nexus tablet right? (stock android + fastboot oem unlock for root = nexus) although im hoping for a lg nexus tab with maybe a nova screen but i dont want that stupid 3D shit. also a “nexus 3” made by lg with a nova screen would be nice to
I think the new lg devices look promising and I believe it’s stock honeycomb so it should be updated quickly. In general w/LG though, I’m holding out on their devices for awhile to see what their history looks like regarding updates. For now, htc and stock android devices get my money because of their history of getting updates out quickly.
If I have a ticket for Google IO, does that count as “I pre-ordered one” or as “I’m waiting for tablets from other manufacturers” ? Too soon to tell I guess.
Where’s the option for “No, I saved my money by buying a Viewsonic G Tablet for less than half the price with basically the same features/specs”?
1 gig of ram makes a huge differance also you forgot honeycomb
1gb does not make much of a difference at all- Especially not $300 difference. To mkae matters worse, the gTablet has USB host and the Xoom does not.
Waiting to see what the Samsung tabs look like. Might as well while waiting for Android 3.1.
While I really really want a xoom, I think it’s a bit ridiculous to market the wifi only device at a price higher than the ipad2, if they had started at the same price or even better at a lower price than the ipad2 like they should, I would definitely own one, but now, I wait till they wise up and drop the price.
It has better specs then the iPad 2. Additionally you can double the storage at a later time. Can any of the iPads do that?
Its the same price as the comparable iPad2.
iPad 2 32GB – $599
Xoom 32GB – $599
I’ll agree if they could have brought a 16GB to market at the $499 price it would have probably sold better. However, the Xoom offers a higher res screen, on board SD, on board HDMI, and an experience that is more than just a phone OS.
For the HDMI and SD support on an iPad you’re going to have to shell out another $60 on top of your $499. It’s not nearly as bad as people are playing it out to be.
Not to mention it has GPS, which you can only get on the 3G versions of the iPad.
How is it more then the ipad 2? Looking at prices on apple store 32gb wifi version is $599.
Waiting for a Nexus tablet
This IS the nexus tablet. Google has said its the reference tablet for honeycomb.
Where’s the I love android but i got an iPad 2 because its better option?
On an apple oriented site. . . . because it just isn’t better. You can say it has more apps but better, I think not.
I love Android, but I got an iPad 2, because for me, it was the better option. Why? Because it has plenty of apps, and it has apps that pretty much give my laptop no reason to leave the house again. I might be interested in Android tablets next year, but until then, I’ll take my apps.
I actually both the 3G version from Verizon however returned it almost 2 weeks into using it. While I am a Android fan and think it was a good product to me it just didn’t have the usefulness that the iPad 2 is currently offering. I am very optimistic that Android tablets will continue to improve in both the manufacturer marketing aspect as well as the breadth of applications. Will definitely be keeping my eye on the Android tablet space however for today through the next 6 months the iPad 2 offers what I need.
Where is the option, “No, waiting a couple of months until the wifi version drops a bit in price”?
I still don’t get what tablets are for. I can’t use it for it work and my desktop computer destroys this for entertainment
It’s one of those “you’ll get it once you’ve used it” things.
You can’t pick up and put your desktop in your lap on the couch. Sure, you could use a laptop, but even that feels big and clunky next to a tablet. The tablet is always on. Sure, you can wake your computer in 2 seconds, but it doesn’t notify you if you have e-mail while it’s just sitting there in sleep mode. Everything just feels a lot more personal and handy than a computer. It’s not so much that you can do something you couldn’t do before, it’s just a better experience.
Huh, that’s funny, because I use my table to do work all the time. In fact, I don’t even use my laptop to type my essays anymore. My tablet’s always on, loads much, much faster, and it gets the job done.
Oh, and I’m sure your desktop would kill my iPad when it comes to entertainment-but I can’t hold a desktop with one hand to watch a movie while I wait outside my classes, and I can’t even take my laptop to the kitchen to watch a movie while I cook without it taking up considerable amounts of table space. It’s quite clear that you miss the point of tablets entirely.
Serious question I have for the people that bought the Xoom, I was trying to decide on the ipad 2 or the Xoom and the only thing I’m not seeing with the Xoom is a way to play Netflix is there a third party way to get Netflix on the Xoom???
Yes, you can use Playon. The quality isn’t great though.
I also found that Amazon Video On Demand works great in the browser. If you’re a Prime Member, it’s a pretty decent option. Not quite Netflix, but still…
Hi deezy
IM not sure about your netflix question, but im here to comment on the iPad, there are several areas where the xoom is a nicer tablet.
1. The iPad does not have adobe flash.
2. The iPad has a smaller screen.
3. The iPad 2 only has one rear speaker.
4. the iPad 2 has a lower screen resolution.
5. The iPad 2 does not have any usb ports.
6. The iPad 2 does not have a tabbed internet browser.
7. The iPad 2 only has 512 mb of RAM vs 1 gig on the xoom
8. The iPad 2 does not have turn by turn on its gps
9. the iPad 2 does not have any external memory card options
10. The iPad 2 is not 4 g capable.
11. Theres a few more things but actually, im tired of typing:)
The only area that I see the iPad has an ‘edge’ is that the iPad 2 is a little bit lighter in weight, but keep in mind, the xoom has a larger screen.
hopefully this helps you with your decision process
Using my Motorola xoom while typing this message and waiting at a 7-11 to get my slurrpy. Only thing I hate is Verizon. But I could deal with them for now. One issue is no Sirius satellite radio for xoom.
My original intent was to get the Xoom. However Motorola had a great opportunity to take advantage of the first Android device. Instead they did not do a smooth roll out, thus me and it looks like many others have now decided to wait to see what the competition is going to do.
Ordered mine from Amazon and still waiting to receive it- should be here tomorrow. I also ordered the black gel case for it. I will also be buying the HD speaker dock.
I’m waiting on mine from Amazon as well. As far as cases, I’m not that interested in the motorla oem case, but there are not enough case options out there yet so I did order that one. Actually, I ordered a 3 piece kit online through verizon. They have got the charging doc, xoom oem case, and 3 pack of screen protectors for 79.99 w/free overnight shipping in case anyone else is interested.
I’m typing this comment on my wifi Xoom now, so far I’m loving this piece of tech. It does everything I could ask for, and its only going to get better day by day. The complaints about it being confusing to use clearly do not apply to people who are comfortable with computers, I’ve had no issues so far. I see where its still rough around the edges but no major complaints, its handled everything I’ve asked of it. My TechSkin screen protector is on the way, and my Otterbox Defender series case will be as soon as they go on sale.
Just grabbed one yesterday but had a family dinner last night so didn’t get to do much with it. So far I’m pretty impressed. My core apps are working and the devs over at Xda have a successful Root for the WiFi only model now. People were bricking them with the WiFi+3G Root files. Just a small change was needed to Root it. I’ll be doing that today sometime. I have a 1st Gen iPad also and I’m enjoying the upgrade from that hardware and honestly I’m just bored with iOS after years of iPhones. Android is my favorite mobile OS right now.
What about gaming on the XOOM it’s far behind Apple and the lacking of good Apps for the Xoom. How long will it be before we start seeing apps and games ported over too the Xoom???
I dunno, a month ago or so? And more games every day.
So, you know, stop panicking.
I got one on Sunday and I love it. I don’t understand everyone saying 600 is still to expensive I’m not going to wait any longer to save 100 bucks. 600 is way better than 800. How can you be so cheap is 100 bucks really worth the 3 months until the price comes down. Then when the price drops there will be something better and you will complain that’s to expensive.
I agree with those who said it was a stupid move to seperate the wifi and 3G edition release dates … my guess is a sales agreement with Verizon to try to ride the hype was at play. My guess is it backfired, but I can only voice my own biased opinion on that: no way i was about to spend $200 more just for the privilege of paying a monthly fee to a carrier I detest. My EVO has a hot spot feature, thank you very much.
That said, I *did* go in on Sunday and walk out with a shiny new Wifi version for the wife. It’s a great unit, does exactly what she needs it to … and by the time I can save up for a tablet of my own I may get one as well as it’s already been rooted and hopefully by then we’ll have some honeycomb SDK for the dev. community to really have fun with.
I should get mine Thursday.
referring to the above comment about force closures. i have had about a dozen of them, but since this is a relatively new device i’m okay with it. updates will come out as they do with all androids. all around i like it but it needs a few updates to fix somethings. for example the microsd slot isn’t working do to an update needed to do so. all around i like it alot so far.
also the people that are complaining about them not releasing a wifi alongside of 3G need to stop complaining. Theres a thing called marketing and that’s whats happening. All companies do this so you might as well not get all worked up over it. It’s just how it goes.
I love mine for work. Saves me lots of time on a daily basis since my office is my car.
Got it and love it!
Also here locally my best buy had lot of pre-orders for it.
Best Buy sold out here in Hawaii.
I’m jealous. . . I want to be in Hawaii.
Ill buy an android tablet when there are some actual apps written for honeycomb tablet form factor.
Waiting for the touch pad and pre three, I love Android and my incredible, but I’ve always longed for webOS.
Personally I’m waiting for the samsung 8.9. The xoom looked too thick and I think the 8.9 price point might be a little better
Ordered my WiFi version from CostCo a week ago, says it will be here on Apr. 1st, i hope it comes sooner though.
Got one and loving honeycomb but returning it in two days. I think samsung will have divx certification and a better display. Not that the xoom’s is bad just want the best.
99% of my mobile use is data. It would be nice if Tab had phone feature enabled. 8.9 Tab looks nice, not sure if the bigger dimensions will cross the line from great to carry around to bulky. Will definitely check out when released in addition to the 10.1 Tab.
