Huawei SmaKit S7

by Rob Jackson on February 16th, 2010 at 10:38 am

If you thought the Dell Mini 5 (5-inch screen) was big for a phone, you haven’t seen the Huawei SmaKit S7 (7-inch screen)! In all due fairness, the device is considered a MID with 3G voice capabilities, and with Bluetooth you’ll probably be using a headset to talk more often than not. Either way, it looks like another winning announcement from Huawei.

Here is what the company had to say about the device:

The SmaKit S7 has a 7-inch wide screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. It supports information-sharing across screens to present the same content simultaneously on computers, mobile phones and TV screens. The SmaKit S7 tablet allows users to easily access local information, visit social networking websites and shop from online application stores. To provide end-users with an integrated home solution, Smakit S7 can be connected to home gateway, TV or Android handsets.

I’m loving the look and feel of the SmaKit although that sounds a bit perverted when taking the device’s name into consideration (Smack It?). Oh come on… lighten up!

The SmaKit S7 has 720p video and HDMI Out after placing it into a docking station. The dock also includes 2 USB ports as a nice added touch. Our friend Charbax snagged a video demo:

smakitphoneMy favorite part of the video – by FAR – is at about 2 minutes 30 seconds in when he asks about 3G and the rep, trying to hold back a smile, says, “If you don’t mind it’s too big you can make calls like that,” as he puts the huge device up to his ear. Priceless.

The SmaKit S7 itself may seem priceless but how much would you be willing to pay for it?

Love it! Will totally line up for this… if only they’d make a belt clip for it :)

  • Magicdroid

iWhat?… I’ll take this with its dock instantly!

  • Colts Fan

    +1 on the belt clip… :)

Would make a GREAT phone for Shaq or Brock Lesnar. How those guys use current touchscreen cellphones with XXXXL size hands I don’t know.

  • Delphi

hehe i’m 6’5 and my nexus one is too small for me :( it’s ok but this phone if it has a snapdragon or better is dream come true for me :)

  • swehes

It would work nicely as a home phone for me. :) VoIP is great. Did it have a front facing camera?

  • http://adq.livejournal.com/ EmilianM

@swehes only ipad doesn’t front facing camera…all other tablets have this

  • akil

is it just me or just that look longer than 7in…..(smh) looks like its x4.5 bigger than the nexus one to me

  • swehes

Just showed this one to a friend and he is already trying to figure out how to make this tablet work as a phone that he can carry around. I think he is about 5’2″ tall or so.

  • Mario

If you will get a Car Dock with it, I would be all over it.
I am looking for long time now for a nice android car radio, but this device with a functional Car dock would defenetly do the job.

  • Brian

This would be a great home tablet. Especially as a home phone too. Making phone calls and surfing the web, the best part is the dock so you can hook it up to the tv and other various things. I love it!!!!

  • brett lewis

I like the ui for it, would be interesting on a phone.
This would be cool to use as a home phone, maybe I can get rid of my land line phone and just use wifi phone with google voice :)

depends of the real features …

well, i’ll spend max 350-400 Euro (or Dollar, because in tech market 1$=1€) for a 7″ android tablet under 2 pounds of wieght and with full connectivity (BT, WIFI and Build-in 3G modem)

There is also the archos 7 next in line!!

  • Droidum

Huawei is not a good company. They steal secrets and intellectual property from other companies and sell it as their own. I’m sure their phone is riddled with the technology of other companies, similar to the Cisco switch they currently sell… I mean the Huawei switch with the Cisco OS.

The Huawei SmaKit S7 tablet has a 7-inch widescreen display with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Such a widescreen format for this Android tablet delivers a fine display of all the applications in a row

looks really great – perfect as integrated everyday note/netbook-handy solution.

Did anybody notice the card-size remote control tucked behind the pad mounted on its dock? Check it out at 1 min 50 sec. I hope the battery lasts quite a bit longer than 4hrs under normal use.

Ok guys here is the low down from someone who bought one. It will work but you gota do soe tweaking. First off the supplied documentation sucks. To acess the sd card via usb
Mount SD Card in device to a connected computer through USB
See Can’t see SD cards through USB on Win7 computer

Huawei S7 has an icon in the upper right corner for “information” AFTER you connect it to your computer press this icon and you will see another screen. On the left side you will see a ‘Notifications’ section and in this section you will see ‘USB connected’ with [SD card] for external and [Internal SD card]. Tap the ‘USB connected [SD card]…’ and you will see the ‘Mount’ (with a warning) that zenkibuta was talking about. Press ‘Mount’ and you will get the pop-up that pbrauer was talking about and your computer will see the external SD card When done, press the “information” icon (upper right on screen) and press ‘Turn off SD card’ then next screen press ‘Turn Off’ before disconnecting your cable.

I see bars used the phone but when I try to make a call it ends immediately. And it won’ hang up. I have to take the battery out, because the call is still running.
