Sony Ericsson Confirms Entire 2011 Android Phone Portfolio Getting Android 4.0

13

Following the release of Android 4.0’s source code yesterday, you had to imagine more manufacturers would begin bringing to light their plans to upgrade devices within their Android portfolios.

While not many have solidified plans just yet, one manufacturer has already stepped forward and provided a list of all their 2011 devices. In a blog post this morning, Sony Ericsson confirmed that the following phones would get the upgrade:

Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™

This is great news considering the hardware that is inside these devices. Most (maybe all) have single-core Snapdragon processors, something that is very refreshing for us to see considering the idea was that only dual-core devices would get in on the party.

Sony Ericsson says they will be merging their own software features into Ice Cream Sandwich’s, meaning you can indeed expect there to be a custom user interface on top of it all.

It’ll be interesting to see how they go about this, but we won’t get our hopes up that Android’s user interface wasn’t mucked with much. In any case, we’re just excited to see Sony Ericsson committing to these plans and we can’t wait for other OEMs to eventually step forward.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Heard this before Sony, I think it was their first Android phone that took almost a year to finally get updated.

    1. The X10 was a flop. They’ve learned from it and have since been the only OEM to update all their device to Android 2.3.4 and 2.3.5. They’ve been really good about it actually..

      I love SE (post X10)

      1.  Exactly. Its amazing how much sony evolved after their mistake with the x10.

They even managed to make the x10 itself better after the updates.

        Love SE S2

  2. Woo!

  3. But first give me 2.3.4 verizon :/

  4. Who cares.  All the decent Sony Phones aren’t available from US carriers.

    1. who cares about americans?

    2. I care I am not from the US so sh*t up

Whose idea was that? We’ve all known for ages that the first phone to receive an ICS update will be the Nexus S, a single-core device.

  6. Too late SONY already return my X10 a year ago

  7. i found a list where we can find the smartphones wich will get an update on Ice Cream Sandwich

    found it here: http://goo.gl/hNnL1

  8. This is really good news. I don’t have a Sony phone myself, but it’s nice to see Sony taking initiative in regards to Android updates. There are too many OEMs that are vague when it comes to when and if their phones will be getting the latest updates. That being said, all of the OEMs are getting better.

  9. Nice
move by AT&T, albeit, Verizon’s package with the Samsung Stratosphere will
    make a challenge for this…for sure!-Omar, blog.vopium.com
