Samsung Galaxy Nexus/Android 4.0 Face Unlock [Face-On Video]

29

If you were watching tonight’s Ice Cream Sandwich announcement, one of the “must-have” features people were talking about was Android’s new Face Unlock. Using Android’s facial recognition software, a user can opt to use their face to unlock their device instead of hassling with the traditional pin codes or pattern unlocks. The idea is simple but the execution — not so much.

During the live event Google’s Matias was having trouble getting his device to recognize his face and even our own Rob Jackson, who was live at the event, had similar difficulties. What do you guys think? Could this be Android’s “Siri?” More importantly, is this a feature you could see yourselves actually using on a day-to-day basis?

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. This is nice, but I just don’t think its the most practical for most. I would rather see fingerprints used. But how you would implement that, I dunno. Its still a cool add on to android.

    1. It world really fast. Look at Engadget post. It works in seconds. This guys camera was messing it all up.

      1. Yeah the Engadget demo was awesome. Here’s a link:

The spotlight pointing right at the phone probably didn’t help either.

  2. Nope…. Don’t lock my phone. Just another step to get stuff done.

  3. Try moving the camera next time!!!! It only takes a few seconds. Lolol very nice feature. So proud of Android

  4. So if someone has a picture of me, they can use it to unlock my phone?

    1. I suppose they could, and if they chop off your finger they could use your fingerprint. I’m thinking that if your friends want to face rape you it’s a whole lot easier to figure your unlock pattern out.

  5. I know that girl, went to school with her.

  6. I have face recognition log in on my Lenovo laptop. For it to work, the lighting has to be good – not too dark like Matias had it on stage and preferably not with a camera light shining into it either.

FYI The Galaxy S II already has this feature, at least the international version, afaik.

  7. A nice feature if it works 99% of the time!!

  8. Apparently you were the only ones having problems. Everyone else says that it works fine.

  9. I’d much rather use the FINGERPRINT SENSOR on my ATRIX 4G, thank you very much. And to those who think that there aren’t any phones with one, the ATRIX is the only one so far.
Now that I look at it, all those caps locks make me look like a douche. Oh well.

    1. You bought an Atrix? I’m so sorry man.

  10. Will lighting affect the face unlock?

    1. This was my question as well, I like to play with my phone in the dark.

      1. lol TMI dude

        1. Well at least I didn’t say “I hope it can recognize my sex face.”

          1. lol very true

  11. Should add a light in the front.

  12. It could be the side effect …. u gve ur friend he use his face to set the lock and then u screwed untill the next day.

    1. It requires you to put in another password or swipe password to change the face setting.

If they know that then your phone might as well have been completely unsecured to begin with.

  13. could you imagine? setting up different faces to unlock your phone. combined with custom setups. your kid unlocks your phone? just games. you unlock it? you get everything.

    1. lol, yea like a persons personal windows user name….each user has different desktops, etc…..coool !!

  14. Face/Off!

  15. This is Android jumping the shark. This will be slow, unreliable and easily defeated. A Waste of engineering effort.

Imagine; in a few months Google will have millions of faces in their database along with our identity, browsing history, music interests, email index, etc…

    1. cool !!!

  16. this sounds like a battery drain?

Wouldn’t the camera have to always be “on”? how about if I just took a picture of my hand doing a weird sign. Could I use that to unlock too?

  17. Er…Visidon Applock anyone!? (search in market)

  18. I have been working on this for a long time, and I can tell you, they have a long way to go before they will get to where my software is… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3qbkKKmGcE soon to be released… when its ready and not before :)
