AirTag 2 with improved privacy and connectivity could launch in 2025

0

Apple’s AirTag was kind of a hit when it launched. Instead of using regular Bluetooth for tracking, it relied on an Ultra-Wideband chipset that provided great accuracy. So far it works as intended, but Apple is apparently planning the AirTag 2 that will launch in the middle of 2025.

This is according to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, where the reporter claims that the device is progressing in manufacturing tests. In terms of design, the report suggests that there won’t be any changes to that. It is expected to largely resemble the current model, but there will be changes under the hood.

For starters, it is rumored to use an updated Ultra-Wideband chipset which hopefully will make its accuracy even greater. Apple is also expected to introduce privacy improvements, such as making it harder to tamper with. This includes making it difficult to remove the speaker, which is something that some people are doing. This means that the AirTag 2 will make it harder to be misused for activities like stalking.

There’s no mention of how much the new model could cost. One of the appeals of the current AirTag is that it is relatively inexpensive, so hopefully Apple will maintain the price of the AirTag 2.
