These days in chipset design, we usually see a mix of different types of cores. This includes more powerful cores for tasks that need a bit more power, and then more power-efficient cores for when the phone does not require that much juice.
But it seems that for MediaTek’s next-gen chipset, the company could be opting for a design that focuses more on power rather than efficiency. This is according to a post on Weibo by Digital Chat Station who revealed the potential specs of the upcoming Dimensity 9300 chipset.
According to the leaked specs, the Dimensity 9300’s current prototype is running 1 Cortex-X4 prime CPU core, 3 Cortex-X4 prime CPU cores, and 4 Cortex-A720 performance CPU cores. There is no mention of any efficiency cores, which could suggest that the chipset will be focused on power, potentially giving it an edge over the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
As for battery life, the lack of efficiency cores is a bit worrying, but perhaps MediaTek could have come up with a design that allows the Dimensity 9300 to still be power efficient even without dedicated efficiency cores. This is something we’ll have to test for ourselves once phones powered by the Dimensity 9300 are released, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
