Google makes Apple look bad by embracing alternative Play Store payment methods

The resentment that some developers have had against Apple and Google over their 30% cut from app sales and in-app sales have been simmering for years, but it was only when Epic took Apple to court after the whole Fortnite fiasco that things really came to a boil.

Now it looks like Google will be the first to actually implement some of those changes. In an announcement by Spotify, the company has revealed that in a furtherment of their partnership with Google, Spotify users on Android will now have the option of paying for their subscriptions either directly through Spotify, or they can keep using the Play Store’s billing option.

Users have always been able to pay Spotify directly, but this is usually done by going to Spotify’s website which was an extra step. Now it appears that users will be able to pay Spotify directly within the app itself. According to the company:

“Users who’ve downloaded Spotify from the Google Play Store will be presented with a choice to pay with either Spotify’s payment system or with Google Play Billing. For the first time, these two options will live side by side in the app. This will give everyone the freedom to subscribe and make purchases using the payment option of their choice directly in the Spotify app.”

Google’s decision to support Spotify is certainly quite a slap in the face to Apple, who had been more or less forced to accept third-party payments due to court rulings, but even then, the company has been dragging their feet into actually taking action.
