MWC 2022 to go on, but Russian Pavilion gets the boot

0

In just a few days, Mobile World Congress 2022 is set to kick off in Barcelona, bringing everyone the second major tech conference of the year following CES. However, the concerns for MWC are not so much surrounding the ongoing global pandemic but instead the current situation in Ukraine and Russia.

GSMA, the organizer for MWC, confirmed that there are “no plans to cancel or postpone” the event at this time. However, the GSMA did state that it would be removing any Russian pavilion at the event.

For the unaware, there are various pavilions spread throughout the conference, with different companies from specific countries that can show off the different pieces of technology they are working on. With this confirmation from the GSMA, attendees will not be able to visit the Russian pavilion, and those unnamed companies will not be in attendance when the show kicks off.

“In light of this emerging situation and considering the tragic loss of life, MWC seems immaterial under the circumstances,” organiser GSMA said in a statement to Reuters.

So it seems that, at least for the time being, Mobile World Congress will go off without a hitch. The event is expected to bring in around 50,000 people, which is pretty close to the number of attendees for last year’s show. However, MWC 2021 was delayed until June due to the ongoing pandemic and MWC 2020 was canceled altogether. While 50,000 attendees sounds pretty impressive, it still pales in comparison to pre-pandemic numbers which saw more than 100,000 people at the show.

As for what you can expect to see from MWC 2022, Samsung is slated to host a live stream event on February 27 where it’s likely to announce a new series of laptops. Other phone makers have already launched their latest devices, but we could end up seeing even more announced during the event.

MWC 2022 is scheduled from February 28 until March 3, and we’ll be sure to bring you all of the most important device launches from the event.
