Google teases the “deep technology investments” they’ve made with the Pixel 6

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 6 series in the coming months. While Google does announce new Pixel phones every year, this year might actually be more exciting compared to previous announcements. This is because this could be the debut of Google’s Whitechapel chipset.

In fact, this is something that Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai is teasing. During Alphabet’s quarterly financial results press conference, Pichai was quoted as saying:

“Android 12 will, of course, be central to Google’s phone [ph] devices. I’m very excited by our fall lineup, which will showcase Android 12 and some of the deep technology investments that are helping us push boundaries.”

While Pichai did not dive into details as to what those “deep technology investments” are, many speculate that it could be in reference to the Whitechapel chipset. For those who are unfamiliar, Whitechapel is the codename for Google’s own custom chipset. For years, Google has largely relied on Qualcomm for the chipsets that powers its Nexus and Pixel phones, but Whitechapel could see them move away from that.

The Pixel 6 has been rumored to be the first Pixel handset that will actually be taking advantage of this new chipset, so it will be exciting to see what kind of performance it can get, and how it might distinguish itself from the competition. Google hasn’t announced a launch date yet so we’ll just have to wait and see.
