There’s a lot of fuss being made about Samsung and Google partnering up, and with all of the beautiful design changes coming to Android 12. But Google I/O is still chugging along, and the Chromium team took the time to announce a new feature for the Chromium build on Android.
If you’re a fan of keeping tabs on your favorite websites but don’t want to have to visit them one by one, you might check out some type of aggregator. But Google phans will remember the days of yore when Google Reader was the de-facto RSS aggregator for all of your favorite news outlets and websites. Well, it would seem that Google Reader is seeing a bit of a renaissance with the latest Chromium for Android build.
Through the Chromium Blog, the team shared an experimental feature that is going to be available for some users which makes it easy to “follow” websites. There’s a little bit of Twitter and RSS sprinkled in, as you won’t have a separate or dedicated app for these feeds. Instead, you’ll need to check out the Following tab within Chromium in order to see the latest news and articles.
When opening a blog or website, and then tapping the three-dot overflow button in the top right corner, a new option will appear at the bottom of the drop-down menu. The name of the website, along with the logo for that site appears, along with a Follow button to the right.
With this feature, Google seems to be trying to not only make it easier to keep tabs on what’s going on from your favorite sites. But the Chromium devs are encouraging websites to make sure that their RSS feeds are up-to-date in order to bring this functionality to users.
There’s no telling whether this will make it into the Chromium Dev or Beta builds, let alone the standard Chrome version that the majority of people use. However, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a built-in RSS reader into Chrome.
