The LG V40 is a great phone, so it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that the company is working on a 5G variant of the device for Sprint. The latest leak from Evan Blass shows off an image of the upcoming LG V50 which features a bold 5G logo on the back in Sprint’s trademark yellow. Unfortunately, the tacky 5G logo appears to be the only thing that will distinguish the LG V50 from last year’s LG V40 on the outside.
We don’t know much about the phone’s specs, but the LG V50 will likely mirror the LG V40 is most instances, but swapping out last year’s Snapdragon 845 SoC for Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 since it’s the only chip that’s compatible with Qualcomm’s new 5G model. This means we should see a 6.4-inch display, 6GB of RAM, a triple camera setup on the back of the phone, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dual camera up front. The other component that should see an upgrade is the phone’s battery. The LG V40 only had a 3,300 mAh cell. Adding 5G connectivity on such a small battery will likely be a disaster.
LG took a similar approach last year when it released the LG V35. The V35 has a newer processor and more RAM than the original LG V30, but the phone’s design was essentially identical. The only thing that’s surprising here is that this new device won’t be named the LG V45. This leads us to believe that LG may have something different in store for us this fall. The company has revealed that it is putting the braked on its first foldable-display smartphone, so there’s a chance that LG is opening up is schedule so that its foldable-display device won’t be competing with any other LG smartphones for a launch this fall.
