YouTube added support for HDR content all the way back toward the end of last year, but there were few (if any) Android handsets that actually supported it. With devices like the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium all coming out of the box with HDR capabilities, it’s time for YouTube to finally catch up.
Some users of these devices have noticed new “HDR” tags showing up inside the resolution options inside the YouTube app. It looks like it’s still rolling out to everyone so if you don’t see it yet, make sure you’ve updated the YouTube app and try again a little later.
While HDR looks fantastic (it really is something that has to be seen in person), the frame rate can take a hit and you’ll need to make sure you have a good internet connection to keep from buffering. If you guys have any other HDR compatible devices — like the LG G6 or LG V30 — let us know if you’re seeing the option as well.
