PSA: removing the Google Photos app from your phone doesn’t disable photo backups

Google Photos, if you haven’t heard, is a great new photo backup and sharing service that complements Google+. It’s the Flickr replacement Google fans have been waiting for, and it’s certifiably awesome.

But it also comes with a couple of quirks for those who don’t actually want to use it. One of those quirks is that uninstalling Google Photos from an Android phone doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not using Google Photos for backup, as the setting exists in the Google Settings app that should be installed on your phone.

So how do you turn it off? Simply find “Google Photos Backup” in Google Settings and select whether you want photo backups enabled or disabled. This is where you can also set upload size/quality, as well as determining when you want backup to perform its duty (such as only when you’re on WiFi). Keep this in mind if you’re not keen on Google automatically backing your photos up, or if you simply decide that you’d rather use something else.
