Motorola says Moto 360 has “$250 approximate retail value” in contest fine print [UPDATE]

Motorola’s kicking off a design contest for users to create Moto 360 watch faces. That’s the skinny of it. Winners will have their designs considered for use on the Moto 360, naturally, and they’ll also be entitled to some pretty nice prizes. One of those prizes — the granddaddy of the lot — is a Moto 360 itself. The story isn’t that Motorola is giving the watch away, though.

The story is that they may have leaked their own pricing for the smartwatch without the intention of doing so. The document lists the Moto 360 as having a “$250 ARV,” which stands for “approximate retail value.” This is by no means concrete proof that Motorola will price the Moto 360 at $250 at launch (things could always change by the time it reaches store shelves), though we can’t think of any other reason they’d set that as the ARV.

What we still don’t know is when we’ll be able to buy one, but we’re hoping Motorola will tag alongside Google at IO late next month to unleash those details for our lonely wrists. In the meantime, if you want to take a crack at this contest (they provide some PSD files for you to toy around with) be sure to visit Motorola’s Google+ page right here.

UPDATE

In a reply to a separate Google+ post, Motorola mentions the pricing in the contest rules is for tax purposes only, and is not the suggested retail price for the upcoming Motorola Moto 360. Here’s their statement:

“Thanks for your excitement around our Moto 360 Design Face-Off contest! We want to make clear that the “Approximate Retail Value” (ARV) indicated in our rules is included for tax purposes only and should not be interpreted as the suggested retail price of the Moto 360 when it becomes available for purchase.”

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Yes, but WHEN?!

  2. I’m still not crazy that they decided to add that little black bezel at the bottom of the screen. It completely messes up the beautiful look of the phone. And for what? Just to have a place to put the Motorola logo?? LAME.

    1. I am 7000% percent there is a reason for that black bezel at the bottom, like the fact that it probably has something to do with the tech that connects the touch screen. It has 0 bezel along the rim so my theory makes sense. Remember there’s actual engineering and technology behind these devices that many ppl don’t think about.

      1. I’m thinking it’s probably like the Nest where the bottom of the face, below the screen, is a motion sensor. Didn’t someone say that on the Moto 360, the screen is off most of the time and only turns on when you’re looking at it? This could be what drives that.

    2. i agree, really does throw the beautiful look off. I have a feeling outcry will make Moto rethink it, at least the ugly logo

      1. Wont change. Public outcry changes nothing.

        1. Right? If it did, we’d have more Firefly, legal marijuana at the corner store in every state, the missing Nigerian girls would be home safe, and we’d have an XBox One sold without Kinect…. waiiiiiiitaminute…..

          1. Exactly Microsoft caved on every new feature for Xbone. The Xbone is a mere shell of what it was supposed to be and most of it was from public outcry. (I have personally lost a ton of respect after the said they would NEVER offer a kinectless sku and did it to save a hundred bux, Cavers! Should if just matched the price and stuck to their guns

        2. I think you’re forgetting the Arab Spring and the ousting of the former president of the Ukraine.

    3. You called it a phone…

      1. Haha, yeah. My bad. I’m so used to ranting about phones here, lol.

  3. All my money.

  4. the black bezel, is actually a sensor…..

    1. ya but the little M? Mugly

      1. i would think that’s not actually going to be on the final product. it’s probably only there on prototype devices

        1. hope so, but if that is indeed not part of the screen, doesn’t this completely ruin the chance for a round watch face?

      2. Majorly ugly? Haha.

    2. Strange how the bezel on some devices gets panned, but on some its ok depending on how a person feels about the device or the brand.

  5. Fools and their money soon part.

    1. Just like iPhone iterations

      1. Hey, watch it! Just say, don’t spray!

  6. I can personally tell you that smart watches are a waste of money and have no benefit

    1. Smartwatches have about as much benefit as real watches. If you could wear a real one, you could wear one of these.

      1. when i had my gear 2 neo, you have to have your phone with you, so if you get a notification on the watch, you get it on your phone too. so whats the point to this “smart watch” if your phone has to be nearby, i 9/10 would always check my phone

        1. What about the Omate Trusmart? You get the opportunity to have either a smart watch, or a completely standalone device that is waterproof!

        2. It’s good if it can remotely take pictures. Set it in the bathroom when your girlfriend’s sister takes a shower, bam.

      2. Do you have any idea how nifty smartwatches are? Being able to see notifications as well as making and receiving calls on it is already great (Galaxy Gear). Who knows what functionalities Motorola will add to the 360.

    2. Didn’t they say this about pagers?

    3. Generally watches (smart or regular) don’t have a use if one wears them just to commute to and from work everyday. Not many among us are pilots, divers or racers. In that case a watch is reduced to being an ornament and is only appreciated by people who care about horological significance, legacy, complications and what not.

      1. ..

      2. I currently work in healthcare and I definitely need my watch everyday. Pulling out my phone in a patients room isn’t a very smart thing to do and even though all rooms have clocks in them, it is extremely handy to have a wrist watch to know how fast to push medication into an IV or to time vital signs.

    4. Yep but if you wear watches and you like the aesthetics of this watch then why not. This doesn’t even look remotely close to a smart watch. And the fact you can change out the face of the watch is icing on the cake. One day you can have the titanium face look the next day a black or white face and so on. So actually this watch separates itself from those other square ugly pieces of $hit watches out there. And with a 250 price tag its not a bad price at all for a versatile watch that looks great as well.

    5. “I can personally tell you that smart watches are a waste of money and have no benefit to me”

      Fixed that for you.

  7. I said it once and I’ll say it again…
    Moto 360, take my money!

  8. 250.00? She will be mine.

  9. The Christina Hendricks of wristwatches

    1. Oohh myy!

  10. Ill wait for the Google or HTC version. thanks ! Will never own or wear anything with the horrid MOTO name.

    1. LOL. But you’d wear the horrid HTC name.

  11. Could someone tell me how to create the watch faces? I downloaded the watch..what type of editor is used? Thanks in advance for your time.

    1. Take your swag and rid the universe of it along with yourself.

  12. Honestly it sounds kinda cheap for this watch. I would think $299.

  13. Would buy. Will buy.

    1. Should buy, must buy.
